Default Mormons Mobilize in California

The LDS Church will be mobilizing its efforts in California to pass a new amendment outlawing gay marriage.

They will be reading a letter to their California congregations to correspond with Gay Pride Day on June 29th.

I'm concerned that this seems to be a "leaked" letter. I'm going to hold off forming an opinion until next Sunday to see if the letter that's floating around is actually what's read, if there's anything read at all. (I have family in California, so I'll probably hear from them about it).

Aside from at least one questionable website that Moksha linked...the fact that the DesNews did a story pretty much placed the Church's imprimatur upon this issuse...

Here is where we'll separate the wheat from the chaff in California.

California Saints will either stand with our Prophet, Seer and Revelators...OR...They'll side with the Homosexual Agenda...it's either/or....

"We ask that you do all you can to support the proposed constitutional amendment by donating of your means and time to assure that marriage is legally defined as being between a man and a woman."

My thoughts on it are that as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, I'll actively support my faith, and the people I sustained (and believe to be) as Prophets, seers, and revelators.
I will do all I can to actively support the definition of marriage as between a man & a woman, any place, because that it an essential part of Heavenly Father's plan and my belief.

We had a similar letter read in our ward (I used to belong) last year, and the Bishop put me in charge (Because I had already registered & voted before the letter arrived in our ward) of contacting all the brothers & sisters of our ward to let them know the link/site to go to register their petitions/votes to support the Marriage ammendment in our state.
They will probably send us another one this year.

Call for political displays rankles some Mormons
By JENNIFER DOBNER
The Associated Press
Saturday, June 28, 2008; 4:53 PM
SALT LAKE CITY

"There is that culture of obedience that once the proclamation has been raised, that's it," said Jeffrey Nielsen, a professor of philosophy who was ousted from the church-owned Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, in 2006 after criticizing the church's position on gay marriage in a newspaper column.

At the same time, Mormonism preaches that God blesses each person with the agency to make his or her own decisions, and some may not surrender that freedom so easily, Nielsen said.

In a letter to his fellow Mormons submitted to several California newspapers, Nielsen wrote: "A growing number of active Mormons, who have gay friends and family members are coming to the conclusion that our current leaders are as mistaken in promoting discrimination against gays and lesbians as was the Mormon hierarchy in the 60's when they opposed equal rights for people of color, and our Mormon leaders in the 70's when they opposed full legal equality for women.

"No one is asking that you condone a behavior that might violate your religious faith, but we need to allow everyone the freedom to live their life as they see fit."
