Default FDIC Failed Bank List

FDIC: Failed Bank List

FDIC Failed Bank List

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This list appears to be updated regularly by the official powers that be. As of this posting there are eight institutions listed that have failed in 2008 ... two of them just today. Keep in mind there are still some smoke and mirror issues here ... as you will see that the FNB of AZ isn't listed as a failed institution. I posted another thread, as they were taken over today as well. However, the FDIC apparently isn't listing them separately for some reason, ... perhaps because they were recently bought out by FNB of NV, which also fell today.

OK, well maybe this will be posted as a sticky so we can all comment on the collapse in real-time as it occurs.

The news reports on this constantly so this is nothing new.

a heard today that a couple of the banks that failed have reoopend under "mutual of omaha" so you money is safe, as long as you dont have more than 100k in each bank

and if you have 500k sitting in a savigns account at your local small town bank, you deserve to lose your money for not diversifiing and investing

Actually in the case of the First National Bank in Nevada and Arizona it will reopen with a Mutual of Omaha name and deposits are completely covered, even over 100K. This is the difference in another bank taking it over and the Feds coming in and taking over a bank.

For those who don't know this the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation is not the government but an insurance company that insures deposits in the bank. Your bank pays a premium for this insurance.

I feel like I should get a sturdy strong box and bury my money out under a tree.

A valid point of comparison is the Savings & Loan crisis of the 1980's. That happy little issue resulted in the FSLIC or the RTC closing over a thousand financial institutions, holding $519 billion in assets.

Another good point of comparison would be some sense as to how many banks fail in an average 3-yr period. I have no idea, but I'm guessing it's not zero.
