A senior U.S. official said the United States and its allies suspected Russia had been planning an invasion for some time and deliberately instigated the conflict through attacks on Georgian villages by pro-Russian forces in South Ossetia despite outwardly appealing for calm and promising to rein in the separatists.

Another AP reporter was in the village of Tkviavi, 7 1/2 miles south of Tskhinvali inside undisputed Georgian territory, when a bomb from a Russian warplane struck a house. The walls of neighboring buildings fell as screaming residents ran for cover. Eighteen people were wounded.

Nice article, Palerider. I think this is big news. Here are just some quotes from the article for people to ponder:

Quote:
“Armed with wealth from oil and gas; holding a near-monopoly over the energy supply to Europe; with a million soldiers, thousands of nuclear warheads and the world’s third-largest military budget, Vladimir Putin believes that now is the time to make his move.”

This year's winner of the Darwin Award goes to President Sobakashvili, leader (at the moment) of Georgia.

On another forum I occasionally visit a young Russian man writes what I believe is the concensus in Russia:

Quote:
Let our boys deal with that madman Sobakashvili
If the idiot knew the power of the Russian military, and then opened fire on both Russian peacekeepers as well as targeting Russian civilians then he's getting what he deserves. If he thinks that putting a guilt trip on the USA as well as giving speeches in English with the EU flag behind him (Georgia is not an EU member) will get him any assistance from anyone he is also mistaken. Like I said before, Europe will not risk its oil supply being diverted to Asian markets and the USA has already stated that any rebuttle to Russia will be merely symbolic.

It is one thing for the president to do everything he can to leave the government headquarters without being killed (I assume it was the government headquarters).

It is another thing to say he is in hiding, when clearly, he's not.

PS I don't have sound, so perhaps there was more information on the video, although it all looked like French to me.

PSS Who are the black men you brought up in your OP? I still can find nothing about them on google. The way you wrote of them, you literally meant they were black and Americans. So what is up with that?

American mercenaries captured/killed in South Ossetia?

Here you go Elphaba.

The sad thing is that if American special forces soldiers (maybe these were mercenaries, maybe not) have been killed in this conflict all their families will recieve is notification from the Pentagon that their loved one died in a "training exercise". That is the standard way such things have been handled when US military personel have died when on secret or illegal missions.

"The 2008 Georgian - Russia crisis began on March 6, 2008 when Russia announced that it would no longer participate in the Commonwealth of Independent States" - link

Why is Russia trying to tear down the CIS? (CIS is the EU of the former Soviet Union)

Russian citizens? Did they ask for passports? So Russia issues a bunch of passports, and labels them as “citizens”. Does that make them citizens? I thought they wanted to be independent.

Did you mean to say Russian President should be tried for crimes against humanity? Obviously, that would have made much more sense since Georgia is only trying to defend themselves against yet another Russian agression.

When the US attacks it is to free oppressed people or for the security of our Republic.

When Russia attacks, it is to oppress people or land grab, or for oil.

Funny that the world condems the US for doing the right thing but collectivly looks the other way when Russia does it. I guess it is easier to stand up to your nice friend than to go after the bully that you know will fight back.

“Russia Has Invaded A Sovereign Neighboring State And Threatens A Democratic Government Elected By Its People”

President Bush: “Such an action is unacceptable in the 21st century.” “I am deeply concerned by reports that Russian troops have moved beyond the zone of conflict, attacked the Georgian town of Gori, and are threatening … Georgia’s capital of Tbilisi. There’s evidence that Russian forces may soon begin bombing the civilian airport in the capital city.” (President George W. Bush, Remarks On The Situation In Georgia, The White House, 8/11/08)

“If these reports are accurate, these Russian actions would represent a dramatic and brutal escalation of the conflict in Georgia.” “These actions would be inconsistent with assurances we have received from Russia that its objectives were limited to restoring the status quo in South Ossetia that existed before fighting began on August the 6th.” - link

Yeah, defending themselves by blasting civilian targets. Whether this played into Putin's hands or not the Georgian government should have known what would happen if they took aggressive actions against Russian civilians.

Like in Guatamala in the 1950s, Serbia in the 1990s and lending assistance in the 1990s for Turkey to ethnically cleanse Kurdish people in eastern Turkey.

When?

Generally I would agree. In this case the Russians have to be given credit for standing up for their people.
