Default Meat recall hits McDonald's, Mr. Sub

Precious Yutangco
Torstar news services

Cold cuts served at McDonald’s and Mr. Sub are among prepared meat products now being recalled because of bacterial contamination.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said the Maple Leaf meats – including sliced cooked turkey, roast beef, Bavarian smokes, corned beef, salami, ham and pepperoni – are contaminated with the bacteria listeria monocytogenes.

The meats are sold under names including Schneiders, ML Sure Slice, Deli Gourmet, MSD, Burns, ML and FS.

“These products have been distributed nationally, primarily to food service institutions such as restaurants, hospitals and nursing homes,” CFIA said in a statement released yesterday. “In addition, these products may also be sold at retail and deli counters.”

CFIA said none of the meat has so far been linked to any illnesses in humans.

The meats are manufactured by Maple Leaf Consumer Foods, which initiated a voluntary recall, CFIA said.

Lists of the affected products are posted on the CFIA and Maple Leaf websites.

Consumers can also call Maple Leaf Consumer Foods at 1-800-568-5801 or CFIA at 1-800-442-2342 for more information.

Food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption may cause listeriosis, a food-borne illness that can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea.

Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.

You know, since I had my gastric bypass operation at the end of May, I've found out that beef just makes me sick every time I try it. *sigh*

Yuck. I'm glad pregnant women are forbidden to eat cold cuts (unless heated up). I do not need another trip to the ER.

As a vegetarian, I used to feel "safe"...but with the recent recalls on lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, peppers...everything is fair game for contamination.

Since when does McDonald's serve "sliced cooked turkey, roast beef, Bavarian smokes, corned beef, salami, ham and pepperoni"?

They sure don't here in CO...
