His money, his choice. His wife is a lawyer. I bet they have enough to buy a $30,000 ring if they wanted.

Sorry but there is a lot of irony over buying a ring that costs more than a lot of people's homes would.

So they are champagne socialists lol big deal - Tony Blair would have done the same cept our policticans aren't that well paid and his wife was the main earner in the family.

I wouldn't mind a ring that looked like that. I'd probably never wear it though, for fear that it would get lost, stolen, dirty, or breathed on.

Perhaps a vow of poverty should be mandatory with becoming president.

With the devaluing dollar, probably best to get in and buy it now rather than after serving his term.

So....you're happy that the media put out this article because you don't like the media because it concentrated too much on the republican nominee's money stuff?

How is it ironic that a rich man is buying an expenisve item that costs more than a lot of people home's? Irony means that something is said/done/happens that's opposite of what you expect. Sorry, but someone rich buying something expensive is the opposite of ironic, it's generally the norm...now if the story told of Obama standing in line at the soup kitchen and telling his wife that they can't afford a ring right now then I could see you're point.

Agree or disagree with the man's politics it's not entirely unexpected that a well off man would splurge every once in a while. To make a big deal out of this is to place it on par with Marie Antoinette's buying of the diamond necklace.

Just a little something I suppose from the man of the people. Oh, by the way, that's pounds, not dollars -- the pound is worth a lot more than the dollar.
There's just one problem: the story isn't true.

Even the link you provided claims Obama never meant to purchase the ring.

Here are two more articles clarifying this:

Barack Obama Not Buying Michelle Obama $30k Ring - Political Machine
Obama did NOT buy ring for Michelle, spokesman says - Lynn Sweet

The news media are starting to pick up the fact that this is a hoax.

Heck, if you click on the link to the original article, you don't even have to read it to know it's not true. The headline is Barack Obama denies claim he is to buy rare £20,000 rhodium ring for his wife to say 'thanks for your support' (emphasis added).

But I'm still with the "who cares?" crowd.
