Default Hey guys, here's the perfect gift for the wife or girlfriend!

Barack Obama to buy rare £20,000 rhodium ring for his wife to say 'thanks for your support' | Mail Online

Just a little something I suppose from the man of the people. Oh, by the way, that's pounds, not dollars -- the pound is worth a lot more than the dollar.

it is a very nice looking ring. personally i would like some fruit trees but thats me. the article does admit at the end that an inquiry was made by a company in the US so not sure it was an actual purchase. he could well get a case of sticker shock with that price.

I can think of many many other things I would want for 30K (none of which add up to 30K by themselves)! But to each their own!

Good for him. It's nice that a man who is so well off financially is willing to do something like this for his wife.

Unless your point was to suggest that a government employee who happens to be a multi-millionaire should somehow be prevented from spending said money, in which case "Boo-urns."

I honestly don't know why a gift Obama is giving to his wife would really matter? Is it because he is the President Elect that it merits attention? I'm sure there are plenty much more wealthy men who are giving their wives much more but hardly in the news.

I would be so mad if I got a ring like that. Even if you have the money to spend on something extravagant, I would rather go on a nice trip (she needs a spa vacation) than wear something of that value on my finger...just me though.

In this economy, I don't think it is wise to feel the pain of those who have no money and buy something like that. If you are telling people to save, why not save yourself? I think it is a nice gesture if that is what she wants, but walk the walk and talk the talk. Why not be the president that was the most frugal in history? That would be admirable especially when we are officially in a recession.

Oh I think it merits a bit of attention since the media made such a big deal over the cost of the clothes that Cindy McCain was wearing when her husband had his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention -- then making it a point how little Michele Obama spent on the clothes she wore at the Democratic National Convention. The media also hammared John McCain for not being sure how many houses they owned in their total portfolio. McCain was presented as rich while the media ignored the wealth of Obama in order to portray Obama as more of a common man.

Sorry but there is a lot of irony over buying a ring that costs more than a lot of people's homes would.

its in the Daily Mail they are a slightly more up market tabloid paper to the ones with topless pages - its not my style of ring but good on him.

I'm sorry I still don't get the hoopla. Campaign is over and this is a personal gift to his wife. So what? I honestly could have gone my entire life without knowing this and it wouldn't have affected my life one way or another.
