What percentage of conservative donations go to churches for mega- buildings and proselytizing versus churches that run soup kitchens for the needy? Does a multi-million dollar contribution to a museum or a new sports arena, with attendant naming rights, count in this comparison of charitable inclinations?
Statistics don’t reveal the whole picture. In America those who itemize on their tax returns can reduce their taxes through giving to charity. In that way, it could be argued that taxpayers actually support those charities.
Before concluding that conservatives are more charitable than liberals, let’s have a finer breakdown of what their contributions are really supporting.

Sorry to get off the track of the health care issue.

Is the proposed health care system going to work as well as the stimulus package did?

In other words, some (read: secular) charities are "more equal" than other charities. And religious institutions are the only nonprofits that use donations, in part, to build their own infrastructure. And conservatives have better tax lawyers than liberals do.
How did I see this coming?

Okay, I'll step off my podium now.

Actually, the ER in my local hospital has a huge sign that says payment or proof of insurance is expected before services are rendered.

I don't know the rules on that, I believe it may have to do with whether the hospital is non-profit or for-profit. I believe the non-profits are required to provide emergency medical care no matter who comes in. For-profits may operate under different rules.

I am against a national health care program, not necessarily because I don't think the government can come up with a reasonable solution (although I think they probably can't), but because it limits solutions to one entity. Even if we do it at the state level, at least we will have 50 different programs to choose from, and learn from the mistakes of. The private sector even adds more competitive ideas and adds the incentive to save money and profit from the program, something the government has no concept of. If it costs too much, just raise taxes. Don't bother trying to cut expenses, even if we have bloated overhead. That's the government way.

Better the government than a for-profit insurance industry that precludes much needed health care for many, in a quest to maximize profits. You do make a good point, nothing is ever spotless or corruption free.
For many, their best remedy is never to get sick.
