Actually I'm not particularly convinced they care what we can and can't afford, just look at the deficit.

This is why the ballyhooed "opt-out" provision for the public option is meaningless. If Congress raids Medicare/Medicaid to pay for ObamaCare, the states will have to either embrace ObamaCare or watch their tax dollars go to other states while their own poor people have even fewer health-care options.
