Harry Reid fireside canceled because of politics
I find it oddly hilarious that people get this worked up about a speaker at a fireside, not to mention the obvious hyperbole of calling Harry Reid "the most evil man on the earth." Bin Laden must be a close second.
Excerpt:
Quote:
One man said, “If I see Harry Reid in the temple, I’m going to hit him.” Another told our stake president, “Harry Reid is the most evil man on the earth, and you and your counselors are next.” . . .
There were even people weighing in from out of state. One woman called from St. George, Utah; my husband took the call, and she gave him a message for our stake president: “You’re a wicked man for allowing this to happen.”

Wingnut, unlike yourself and the wonderful macadamia nut, these people are tough and toxic like the horse-chestnut. Both the Spirit as well as Harry Reid were driven out of that Chapel.

But Harry Reid is Da Debil(Da Debil is a FunkyTown(R) creation - TM, all rights reserved, Patent Pending. Any similarities or events or persons in real life is purely coincidental)

And this blog post contains some great quotes from President Grant about how members should conduct themselves with respect to politics.

*sigh*
On this board we may have our political differences, but I have yet to see someone call me an unbelieving heretic. And I am convinced of the goodness of those on this board who reside on the other side of the political aisle. Too bad not all Saints can get along as well as we do

Punching people in the temple?
I'm no stake president, but that kind of attitude alone is probably worthy of recommend-revoking . Someone obviously misses a key point in the gospel. Not to mention a key part of being American.
I'm no fan of Harry Reid, but he is an influential member of the church. As long as this fireside does not become his BYU Devotional part II ( Harry Reid Blew It | A Soft Answer), there should be no problem. In other words, I would hope that he be asked to present at least an outline of his talk for approval beforehand... But you can't outright ban a guy in the position of Harry Reid. Edit: A guy (or gal) shouldn't be banned, no matter their position, unless there is a worthiness issue... Which is between the speaker and bishop/stake president, NOT the ward. I figured that was obvious, but apparently some folks don't have it figured out. End edit.

Its a sad day if that happened. I wonder if a General Authority's fireside would be cancelled if they knew his political leanings...

Well, the reactions were out of place. However, a GA's political leanings are different than the actions of an individual who led the drive getting a bill passed as divisive as Health Care. There are those who believe this is a great bill inspired by Heavenly Father to help those in need. There are those who believe that this bill is just another institution created to remove our agency and any such action or institution has only one source. So, I can understand how it got so heated in general, but, no, I do not defend the actions, threats, etc, at ALL. Stupid people exist on both sides of the debate.
