Default Biting of Gold Medals

Okay well I will admit that I've been rather annoyed constantly seeing pictures of gold medalists and the biting of the medals. It has grinded on me like all the pictures you see of the fish lipped teenage girl pictures. Just a thing with me.

Then I saw the following article. At least it explains it.

Why Olympians bite their medals - CNN.com

I thought it was just for the "taste of victory"...

But yeah, it makes sense that the Olympians probably won't chomp if the photographers didn't ask them to.

Very similar article I read yesterday: You've just won a gold medal! So why are you trying to eat it? - The Body Odd

Never noticed. But now that it's been mentioned - yeh they do that a lot! Makes sense per the article. I guess if it were bigger, they'd plank it.

Great, now that the idea is out there...

You can't see it, but I'm sure there is a gold medal under there.

Well before my viewing of the article ill guess it comes from the old practice of determing if something is made of enough or pure gold.

No idea how it got made into a tradition for the olympics

Why wasn't I told that the Olympics actually had a catering budget?
