Default An excellent site about slavery -- including European slaves.

The Scourge of Slavery

I think this is an interesting site in that it is way more comprehensive than anything you would find in government school textbooks in America.

I know it is not politically correct but Muslim pirates raided in western Europe as far away as Iceland and also into the ereas now known as eastern Europe. Generally, they were looking for female (some male) sex slaves as well as workers for mines, agriculture etc. The same was true for the extensive slave trade in Africa. So why, with about 1.5 million Brits, Russians, Spanish, etc. and many more African slaves being transported to the Middle East are there not more physical characteristics of these peoples left behind -- as is seen with the extensive American black population as well as the Brazillian? Females were for fun, not reproduction, and males were generally castrated (except those trained for military service as in the Ottoman Empire).

The reason this information should not fall into "memory hole" is that Europeans should not feel that their ancestors were in some way doing something no other peoples in modern times did. In collge I took a course in Latin American History in which it was the first time I was exposed to the very politically incorrect fact that the Spanish adopted the slave practices they used in Latin America from their Muslim overlords. When the Muslims were thrown out of Spain the Spanish still had access to the slave infrastructure the Muslims had established in Africa. With new colonies, and not being able to use Indians for slaves all that well, they introdued slavery into the New World on an industrial scale. The Brits and Dutch copied the system and also took advantage of it until later times when Christian ablitionist groups fought to end the slave trade in these nations and their colonies.

Check out the site -- it is interesting and should be used to supliment what passes for history in public schools.

From Fiannan's link on slavery:

Rescued from slavery by the British Navy,
Samuel Crowther, born 1807, became the
first African bishop of the Church of England.

It's an interesting point that Africans took slaves before modern Europeans and North Americans did and continued to do so after it was abolished by Europeans and North Americans.

There are some traces of European blood in northern Africa, some of the Berber people have blue eyes and blond hair.

Yes, in isolated areas of norhtern Africa one can find red-headed or blond Berbers. I have read that the Libyans of ancient Egyptian times were a blond race, and the Romans also had extensive colonization of the area so the Berbers may be either original inhabitants or have Roman blood. Another theory is that they are remnants of the Hebrews (which would also explain the lighter characteristics -- after all, the Tribe of Joseph were thought to be pale and red-heded. The interesting thing is that if you want a better picture of what original peoples looked like, aside from pictures on ancient wall, it's good to go into really isolated areas where mixing during times of empire building would be at a minimum.

As for the slave genetic influence, if the article is correct, sex concubines would not reproduce much. There is a section of the Haddith (kinda like our Doctrine and Covenants for the Muslims) where Mohammed tells a man that it is okay to practice birth control with his slave girl. Also, having children with slaves for a Muslim might be problematic in some respects since any child conceived by a Muslim man HAS to be raised a Muslim -- and cannot be a slave. As for males, if they were sent to mines or used a galley slaves, their lifespans would be extremely short. If used for domestic slavery they had to have their testicles removed (suppose that would make them more dosile as well as prevent any unintended pregnancies with Muslim women). That would reduce any genetic contributions foreign slaves might make.

Segal also observed that: "White slaves from Christian Spain, Central and Eastern Europe" were also shipped into the Middle East and served in the "palaces of rulers and the establishments of the rich." He records that: "All slavic eunuchs.are castrated in that region and the operation is performed by Jewish merchants."

Muslim slave raiders kidnapped women from Europe for harems in the Middle East.
Historian Robert Davis in his book "Christian Slaves, Muslim Masters - White Slavery In the Mediterranean, the Barbary Coast and Italy", estimates that North African Muslim pirates abducted and enslaved more than 1 million Europeans between 1530 and 1780. These white Christians were seized in a series of raids which depopulated coastal towns from Sicily to Cornwall. Thousands of white Christians in coastal areas were seized every year to work as galley slaves, labourers and concubines for Muslim slave masters in what is today Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Libya. Villages and towns on the coast of Italy, Spain, Portugal and France were the hardest hit, but the Muslim slave raiders also seized people as far afield as Britain, Ireland and Iceland. They even captured 130 American seamen from ships they boarded in the Atlantic between 1785 and 1793.

According to one report, 7000 English people were abducted between 1622 to 1644, many of them ship crews and passengers. But the Corsairs also landed on unguarded beaches, often at night, to snatch the unwary. Almost all the inhabitants of the village of Baltimore, in Ireland, were captured in 1631, and there were other raids in Devon and Cornwall. Many of these white, Christian slaves were put to work in quarries, building sites and galleys and endured malnutrition, disease and mistreatment at the hands of their Muslim slave masters. Many of them were used for public works such as building harbours.
Female captives were sexually abused in palace harems and others were held as hostages and bargained for ransom. "The most unlucky ended up stuck and forgotten out in the desert, in some sleepy town such as Suez, or in Turkish Sultanate galleys, where some slaves rowed for decades without ever setting foot on shore." Professor Davis estimates that up to 1,25 million Europeans were enslaved by Muslim slave raiders between 1500 to 1800.
