Teancum, thanks for adding to the body of original thought.
An Angel commanding polygamy and threatening to kill if it is not practiced does sound a bit off, does it not?
One question, what of all the subsequent speculative theology that has arisen from the polygamy stuff?

People still feel the same about those in the early LDS days. So were the early leaders of the church just dirty men? What about others throughout history who have practiced such things?
Just because they practice polygamy and there appears to be underage girls does not mean that they just want only to satisfy their pleasures. These guys have to support these families and work hard.
As far as being an FLDS spin doctors or attorney... I'm flattered that you feel I have the skill to be an attorney. If spin doctor is the term for speaking truth as I see it then I guess I'm guilty as charged.
Disclaimer: I am not affilitiated in any way (except for a church's origin) to the FLDS church.
I support truth and the protection of our freedoms bought with blood

Actually sex has very little to do with their culture. They teach only to have intercourse when trying to conceive children and there is none while the mother is breastfeeding. People are assuming modern American motives on these people that quite simply do not apply.

I'm not the one that brought up the "Joseph was mistaken" argument that was TBM Teancum. I was just stating the obvious problem that LDS people would have with his theory.

I'll just reiterate what I just wrote to the other guy...
It was Teancum's theory Joseph was wrong NOT mine. I was just stating the obvious problem many LDS would have with his theory.
You people need to actually read not skim.

As for if I have researched the subject... I'm quite positive I could run circles around you in this and various other subjects pertaining to the restored gospel.

We are in agreement here. Everyone is assuming that these guys are nothing more than sexual perverts based on our understandings of their culture. This point makes a huge difference.

Interesting points brought up. I do think this leaves LDS people vulnerable on the polygamy issue. However, that vulnerability does not have to exist.
There are some, like Mitt Romney, who said that polygamy was a terrible thing. His words: “I can't imagine anything worse than polygamy.´". I think that to hold this view as an LDS person indicates a lack of understanding of polygamy or it was merely an attempt to make him more appealing to non-LDS voters.
However, there are some with this view and the more LDS people hide from the facts (the who, what, where and whys of polygamy) the more people wil feel insecure about the faith.
Martin Luther moted that the great men of the Bible were polygamists by and large. To deny them of their rightious lifestyles would question the validity of the Bible.
Instead of saying polygamy was some sort of test or some mistake or something you are thankful we don't have today why not look at why the Jews of Europe abandoned polygamy several hundred years ago. They never condemned it, they just suspended it in the face of hostile European nations persecuting them. They never questioned the morality of the practice.
We should address the issue in the same way. Polygamy may even come back in our lifetimes in the Church. Hey, look at the way laws and attitudes change. If someone could have told you in 1965 that by 2008 people would be seriously discussing issues like gay marriage as well as telling you that just about everyone in the USA had access to images of anytihng imaginable to the human mind by just clicking an electronic instrument in the home, and that this would be protected as free speech by the law of the land people would think you insane. Polygamy was suspended in the 1890s -- so what? Even when it was allowed some men and women loved polygamy and some wanted nothing to do with it. Freedom of choice was the key.
There is nothing immoral about polygamy. As for marriage of young teen women there is also nothing immoral about that (from a Biblical point of view) but depending on what state in the USA or what country you are in certain ages can be illegal. Even one thing Jeffs was nailed on -- a cousin marriage -- is illegal in Utah if you are of reproductive age but in many states it's legal and probably most countries. I will say that if your kid's social studies teacher isn't spending time analyzing the complexities of this case then they really are missing a golden opportunity to examine every aspect of law and attitudes in society.
