Default No Trial we experience is wasted

No pain that we suffer, no trial that we experience is wasted. It ministers to our education, to the development of such qualities as patience, faith, fortitude, and humility. All that we suffer and all that we endure, especially when we endure it patiently, builds up our characters, purifies our hearts, expands our souls, and makes us more tender and charitable, more worthy to be called the children of God. . .and it is through sorrow and suffering, toil and tribulation, that we gain the education that we come here to acquire and which will make us more like our Father and Mother in heaven."
(Quoted in Spencer W. Kimball, Faith Precedes the Miracle, p. 98.

The word Mother in Heaven is not often used in GC or by leaders of the church. President Kimball was outspoken on several subjects and this was one of them when discussing our Heavenly Parents.

As I agree with trials and it is up to us to learn from them and apply it in our daily lives.

I disagree. I think some trials are put upon us as a form of punishment.

I have always (well, since becoming an adult) believed that every thing we experience is a learning opportunity. Nothing we go through is "wasted"...there is always a lesson to take from any situation.

But as parents we punish in hopes that our children learn something.

And why do people punish, kona?

(Think about it from the perspective of a righteous parent, and not a kid...)

Help me understand. When I read this, I agree with Pres. Kimball. However, it sure doesn't sound very hopeful. How do we understand this quote with the quote from Joseph Smith who said, "Happiness is the object and design of our existence..."

Perhaps I just don't have a good perspective, but suffering and sorrow doesn't sound very happy to me.
