Many people believe Lincoln would be a Democrat today because he was from a poor family and they equate the Democratic Party with being for the poor and working people. In reality, Lincolns family was poor by todays standard but if you check the tax records of Kentucky, as I have done, you find that Lincoln's dad paid the highest property tax of anyone in the county. So, they were actually one of the better off families in the area.
