Tenn. County Wants to Charge Homosexuals
1 hour, 18 minutes ago Add U.S. National - AP to My Yahoo!

DAYTON, Tenn. - The county that was the site of the Scopes "Monkey Trial" over the teaching of evolution is asking lawmakers to amend state law so the county can charge homosexuals with crimes against nature.

The Rhea County commissioners approved the request 8-0 Tuesday.

Commissioner J.C. Fugate, who introduced the measure, also asked the county attorney to find a way to enact an ordinance banning homosexuals from living in the county.

"We need to keep them out of here," Fugate said.

The vote was denounced by Matt Nevels, president of the Chattanooga chapter of Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.

"That is the most farfetched idea put forth by any kind of public official," Nevels said. "I'm outraged."

Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court (news - web sites) struck down Texas' sodomy laws as a violation of adults' privacy.

Rhea County is one of the most conservative counties in Tennessee. It holds an annual festival commemorating the 1925 trial at which John T. Scopes was convicted of teaching evolution. The verdict was thrown out on a technicality. The trial became the subject of the play and movie "Inherit the Wind."

In 2002, a federal judge ruled unconstitutional the teaching of a Bible class in the public schools.

Note: Hey Stephen, how much you wanna bet that the most esteemed Commissioner J.C. Fugate is a BA?

I never understood why so many christians feel that people un affiliated with their faith should be held accountable to their standards. In 1cor 5:9-13 it clearly says we shouldnt judge those outside the church. They dont know any better.

If they want to make homosexuals sins illeagle they may as well make some of their own illeagle. Since they are in just as much need of christs blood as anyone else.

These people have not only failed to grasp their own faith but are responsible for a negitive image of christianity.

This is true. But sin is sin....according to the creator of this planet. I believe that there has to be some consessions on the part of sinners....when it comes to their creators desires and rules.

And...we can't please everybody...so we might as well please the 'powers that be'...in the grandest sense of those words...

I disagree completely. Their being gay or not doesnt matter. If all these homosexuals all of a sudden turn strait are they going to heaven? NO. There can be no salvation without christ. As christians not only do we have no place to tell the unsaved what they can and cant do but its pointless. The only thing we have the right to do is try to convert them. So that they willingly choose to accept our beliefs. I believe the imposeing our beliefs onto them (not that i belive their beliefs should be considerd acceptable) is wrong.

Oddly enough those crazies in that county would outlaw the LDS if they could too....
you know; making "cults" illegal and all of that. A "cult" being anybody who doesn't believe as they do....
