The header image is from a painting by Mark Maybry. There is a link at the bottom of the page which takes you to the website where he sells his work. The work is "Angels" and references the below scripture on the product page:

Quote:
And the Angel said unto them, Fear not; I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.

-Luke 2: 10-11

Mark Mabry is awesome. Oh and one slight correction to Dravin's explanation.

He's a photographer not an artist. An artist in the sense of painting.

Thank you; I never bothered to scroll that far down

These angels are definitely different than the images of angels I remember seeing depicted when growing up (not LDS).

Yep - to us mormons, angels are just God's messengers. We are mortals, but members of the same race. No wings or halos on our angels.

Full disclosure - not everybody here is a huge fan of that image. I remember mixed comments when they added it to the website, although mostly positive.

In fact, we are (or should be) God's angels. Angels are simply heavenly messengers on God's errand. That should describe us.

It is no coincidence that we confer the Aaronic Priesthood upon twelve-year-old boys. When this Priesthood was restored by John the Baptist, he said that the Aaronic Priesthood held "the key to the ministering of angels". By my understanding, this means that our young men are authorized, indeed required, to act as messengers of God and quite literally as angels.

Thank you for clarifying that last part. Photographers are most definitely artists.* It might be more accurate to say that he's a photographer, not a painter.

*Says the completely unbiased photographer.
