Default It's not coffee, it's a substitute?

Not to start a debate or anything, but I do have a question for church members out there. I used to drink coffee before joining the church because I loved the taste of it. Up until now, I didn't know that there was such a thing as a "coffee substitute," which literally contains no coffee and no caffeine. If I drank this, I don't believe I'd be breaking the Word of Wisdom, as I've said before, no coffee beans -- think rye, barley, and chicory! But what do you think?

And please refrain from responses such as, "Well, if you're questioning whether or not it'd be breaking the Word of Wisdom, then you probably have your answer," because it's not really that sort of question. I want to know if members would somehow be offended if I drank something that contains the word "coffee," in it ... I know people who get offended because converts drink NON-ALCOHOLIC "beer" because they like the taste, when there isn't any alcohol in it and the only real offense is that the word "beer" is stamped on the label.

One of the brands I saw at Broulims today was called "Pero." The website states this about their product:

"Looking for a natural alternative to caffeinated coffee or tea?

Your search is over. PERO is a 100% natural beverage with a coffee-like taste. It’s 100% naturally caffeine free and blended from select all natural ingredients --- malted barley, barley, chicory and rye. And because PERO contains no stimulants it will not elevate heart rate or blood pressure, cause sleeplessness or create any adverse physical ailments typically associated with caffeine consumption. Plus, the low acidity of this natural beverage makes it easy to enjoy morning, noon or night without fear of stomach upset.

PERO can be mixed with your favorite ingredients to create your own hot drink specialties to relax and enjoy.

So, take a break -- and make PERO the beverage of choice for you and your family."

Postum used to be something we drank at my house growing up. (raised LDS). It was a roasted grain drink. I can't find it anymore. It wasn't considered breaking the WoW.

I hope that helps.

Caffeine is not found anywhere in the Word of Wisdom.

When I was inactive I drank coffee, mostly just a cup in the morning to give me a little kick and I liked the taste. Now, I drink pero occasionally. I think i have had the same can of it for over a year, but when im craving coffee which is rare at this point, I will have some. To my knowledge it is not breaking the word of wisdom as there is no coffee in it.

I know there is no mention of caffeine in the Word of Wisdom; however, I threw that out there because some people seem to be fanatical and won't even drink a sip of soda because of the fact they think the reason behind the revelation for no coffee was due to the caffeine versus the health consequences due to the bean itself. Heck, I drink a soda every now and then.

Pero and Postum are two WoW friendly coffee replacements.

I rather like Postum; Pero not so much.

I'd rather have a cup of Jasmine Flower herbal tea any day of the week.

Postum was discontinued a couple of years ago. No longer available.

My fiancee, a convert, drinks chicory drinks. Absolutely nothing against the WoW in drinking coffee substitutes.
