Default How do I use the multi-quote feature?

I already did a search on this, but wasn't able to find anything. Maybe I need to look through the threads here to find out more about that while I'm at it. But anyway....

If I want to reply back to multiple portions of a single post, how to I quote one portion, comment on it, quote another portion, comment on it, etc., all within the same post? I've seen it done, but all my experimenting with the multi-quote feature seems to be in vain.

Or am I getting multi-quote confused with something else?

At any rate, I'd like to know how to break a single quoted post up into sections which I can comment on, one by one.

The multi-quote function allows you to quote multiple posts in one reply without having to open multiple windows or tabs. If you want to quote sections of one post separately, you have to do it manually, using the quote block button in the compose window.

I just use the quote tags around multiple blocks of text. For instance:

If you want the originally posted by, just do [quote=name] if you want the link back to the post (the little blue button with an arrow) include the semi colon and number you see when you quote somebody using the "Quote" button, and if you don't care about either of that just (quote) does the job (don't forget to close with a backward slash "/" ).

Also an important note, use brackets [ and ] instead of parenthesis ( and ), I'm using the parenthesis so it won't parse the commands correctly so you can see them. If you want to see it correctly just click the quote button on a post you've seen something you like in and the code will show up in the reply window.

Thanks everyone, especially Dravin.

I didn't realize you had to manually type the html code.

Okay, I was going to show off what a good learner I am and it isn't going like I'd hoped. What did I do wrong?

It seems you put two starting quote tags in but only ended with one. You need to specify where each quote ends. The BB code uses similar methods (but not identical) to HTML, e.g. the end quote tag (the word "quote") is prefixed with a forward slash and in brackets.

I experimented with this on another thread just a few minutes ago and it worked fine, only I just did the quoted text and name, without the blue arrow. That's where I'm messing it up, the blue arrow. I'll take another shot at it tomorrow.

Well that's funny. I just used the quote button this time and the blue arrow was there. I'm really scratching my head now because I don't see what I did differently when I tried to do it manually. I wonder if it might be like you said, Mahone, and there's a problem with multiple code statements in the post, but not all of them are closed properly. I'll try it again tomorrow quoting something without Dravin's instructions in it. Quoting his instructions as they are seems to be my problem. Maybe I'll adjust them slightly and see if they don't end up getting parsed, which is what I think happened.

Here's the thing. When you quote someone using the quote button, it automatically puts their name and blue arrow in there. If you parse their post and put a paragraph in each quoted section, you have to do the name manually if you want it. Most of us don't worry about that, as it's understood that until we see a new name, it's all quoting from the same post.
