While this won't be directly related to internet browsers, you should do a defrag every once in a while too.
Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter
Do an "Analysis" on your hard drive just to see how bad it is (I think it's fun). Then click "defrag".
And just let it run.
(Note: If you're using a company issued computer, ask your technical support department FIRST before running a defrag program. I did this once and I completely messed up the computer where it needed to be re-imaged. If it's your own computer, you should be fine.)

They are actually stored in the cookies - so clearing the cache only shouldn't affect that.
Have you tried the suggestions here, Elphaba? How did they go?

Oh yes - The archaic world of Microsoft Windows - for those that just can't stand to leave the dark ages behind.

Windows is by far the most popular desktop operating system still and there are some people who have absolutely no choice but to use windows. So it's hardly archaic yet (at least no more than the mac OS is), but if history teaches us anything, it is that Microsoft is on a very lucky 25 year spee and hopefully within the next few years we'll start to see their usage decline.

Sometimes, visiting sites that are plagued with adware, spyware, and the like can really slow down your computer. Also, are you using a wireless connection to connect to your internet or is your laptop directly plugged in. Sometimes wireless connections can be unstable and have limited amounts of broadband (compared to directly linking up with your main internet source). However, sometimes the simplest solution is to just simply restart your computer.
If this doesn't work, you can download a free version of Ad-Aware. Also, I would recommend to start using a safer browsing search engine from now on.
Well, I hope these suggestions work out for you. If you have more questions, send them my way.
Have a great day...

Everyone's pretty dead-on about the cookies and cache. The only thing I would add is that if you want uninterrupted streaming video, the best thing to do is to pause the vid as soon as it starts playing, then wait a minute or two while it finishes loading. If you're able to get your speed issues worked out, then this shouldn't be necessary very often, but it's a nice trick to know for those slow days.

Elph, test your speed - go to this site, Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test , let us know where your speed is at.
If it is at 512 or lower- then it is NOT your laptop, it is your server.
Also, what anti virus system do you have?
If you have Norton, pay the money to have a pro remove ALL of it. Norton is evil- it will suck the life out of your computer. McAfee is worthless. Go with AVG- it is free and it works great, plus it doesn't suck the life out of your computer. AVG Free - Download installation files & documentation

This thread is old now, but this is not necessarily true. Spyware can be sending out masses of data, which would in turn seriously reduce connection speeds. Spam bots will do exactly this.
It also depends on the OPs original connection speed to begin with.

I wonder if that is why this site is slow at times. We get lots of search bots that come to the site.

Yes, the spiders search engines use (along with other types of spiders) have been known to topple servers over completely. The more popular search engines limit how many pages their spiders will crawl on one website over a period of time, for this exact reason. But some of the lesser known search engines simply don't bother as they as less likely to get into trouble for it.
