Default Ask Mahone about my computer....

Mahone! My desktop computer (Windows XP) and my laptop (Vista) both have really slow connections. It's been about 3 days now. I've tried rebooting, running scans, etc. I have tried using IE and Firefox. I cleaned out my cache/cookies on my laptop. It seemed to make it worse.

It's driving me batty! FB is the worst, lds.net is running a close 2nd. There's only one website that I noticed isn't having too much trouble. There are no graphics on that website.

What to do?

Reformat your computer and start all over. Works every time.

Test your speed
Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test

If its slower then it should be then its your ISP not your computer. You can have the fastest computer in the world and it doesn't matter if you have a 28kbs modem!

With it happening on both computers, its mostly something outside the computer

Hahahahaha, I think this is the first time I've ever been mentioned in a thread title.

That is exactly what I would say. It's not definite but most likely. Do your computers run more slowly than normal outside of internet connectivity? If not, that would just support the notion that it's not the computer itself.

Disconnect your modem from it's power source, do the same with your router and anything else that is sitting between your computer and the cable linking to the outside world that connects to your modem. Leave off for about a minute or so, then reconnect. See if that makes a difference.

If this doesn't help, try switching all the computers (remembering things like the ps3) that use the internet connection off bar one, and see if you still have the same issue. If this is still true, then switch that one off and try the same with a different computer.

This will all help to narrow down where the issues lies.

How do you know what to turn off or what to delete or what else it is that you need to do?
