While my personal computer is on XP still, I've used both Vista and Win7. Switch as fast as you can to Win7. It really is a nice update with wonderful new stuff. I really like the Libraries ability (you can have one document/file show up in more than one folder without having extra copies floating around).

'tis a good point. The only advantage I can find on a mac over a PC is that it "looks cool", so to speak. But so can a PC if you get the right hardware and software.

There is nothing wrong with mac hardware or OSX, but windows is far more compatible (due to popularity) and PC hardware is considerably less expensive. PCs are also just much more customizable.

i have read online that if you buy the upgrade version, you can still do a clean install to a pc without a previous install on it.

Clean-install Windows 7 from the upgrade disc

You can perform a clean install with an upgrade copy. You will need a qualifying product key though. During the installation you will be asked for the product key of your previous version of Windows. This only upgrade paths are from either Windows XP or from Windows Vista. If you are upgrading from Windows XP you are required to perform a clean install.

Will the WinXP programs that wouldn't work with Vista (I'm specifically thinking of GospeLink 2001) work in Windows 7?

There are other options:

One is to make a dual-boot for your computer. Create two partitions, and make it dual boot to XP on one, and Win7 on the other.

Second is to use a virtual drive. Boot in Win7, then start up a virtual session and starting XP in it. There is some good virtual software out there.

Might consider waiting till the second beta version - it will have the designation SP2. The first beta version will come out next year and the second beta about 1.5 years after that. Right now, lack of drivers for the final alpha version that was released on October 22, are a critical factor.

Windows 7 will not upgrade the most popular Windows XP.
It does...it is called WIN 7 [Professional]. See link: Windows 7 - Ready to upgrade to Win7 at CompUSA.com

However, I caution anyone who have Vista and wants to upgrade. You are better off spending the dollars for the 'full version'. It is not the same code as Vista but XP.

There is alot of earlier problems known in Vista where XP has matured over 15-years now.

I do have to admit Hemi..I thought your response would be more along the line of "Let the Spirit guide you to know whether this is a wise upgrade or not."
