When certain changes are made to the site database(s), the site is inaccessible for a short (one or two minutes) period of time. These changes can happen on a semi-regular basis, and are usually initiated by administrators/moderators of the site from a front end interface. I have no means of accessing the raw data in the database or the source code of this website, so I cannot tell you why this happens, merely that it does.

The longer periods of downtime will have a different cause however. If the site goes offline at midnight on the dot, the chances are it is some automated routine maintenance (clearing the database of stale records for instance), possibly combined with the above problem that causes what you are seeing.
