Default green tea

(Oh - if you don't mind, please only vote in the poll if you are a Mormon with a current recommend - thanks)

Some people say herbal tea is OK?

I am especially interested in the medicine. I am having a hard time finding a specific type of medicine that does not contain Green Tea extract

Grape juice and wine both come from grapes, right? Wine is not Mormon kosher because it is fermented and contains alcohol.
Green tea and black tea both come from the tea plant, Camelilia sinensis. Black tea is fermented. Green tea is not...

Is asking if green tea in medicine is OK - like asking if eating tiramisu is OK?

would you give a temple recommend to someone who has a vitamin supp containing green tea extract?

Can anyone find any clarifying statements by anyone on what "tea" means?

LOL. I'm sure he has some research.

Define medicine. Do you mean, something I can pick up at the drugstore? Or do you mean prescribed by a doctor?

My hubby, the chiropractor, says it is fine. He says some supps have red wine extract, too.

ETA: I know people with TR's who do drink green tea and those who will not. I also know many eat it in food or supplements w/o even knowing.

If the supplement comes via a doctor's prescription, then why would anyone care? I think it gets murky after that. I would talk to your bishop about it to see where he stands.

The first questions I would have are:

1. Is it a hot-beverage?
2. Does it contain caffeine?
3. Does it come from the Camelia Sinensis plant?

I think a bishop would have issues if your answers were yes, yes, yes. Other combinations would be tricky.

As far as the WoW is concerned, I think the hot-beverage/caffeine issue is the biggest problem as that seems to be what the brethren have focused on the most. If the "tea" does not come from the Camelia Sinensis plant it most likely is an herbal tea. In Korea, there are three "teas": hong-cha, nok-cha, and oolong-cha. The rest are herbal, like: ginger-tea, ginseng-tea, and citron-tea. Most LDS over there avoid the three "teas". Life in Korea would be unbearable and unhealthy if people did not drink bori-cha or barley tea. It soaks-up the heavy metals in their water. Personally, I hate the stuff, but I would never drink tap-water over there. Koreans don't.

I cannot answer the poll, not enough choices. Since I am non-LDS, I'm in favour of all teas.

Editing to add that I hadn't read changed's first post. Just ignore.

Medicines as long as doctor prescribed should be ok. However, as mentioned Green Tea can slip into many herbal supplements. It is a good question to ask. As for myself I will probably avoid Green or Black Tea in any form as I seem to have picked up my mother's sensitivity for medicines. A while ago she was taking an herbal supplement and she began to feel strange, like not feeling well, when she discovered that the supplement had Green Tea in it she stopped taking it and the strange ill feeling went away.

I myself have weird reactions to regular cold medicine that ranges from feeling dizzy to full on hallucinations. So I tend to avoid cold medicine even when I am sick. As there are a lot of medicines out there that we wouldn't take (via our beliefs in the WoW) if it were not prescribed then I think that if a Green Tea supplement is prescribed and it works for what you are taking the supplement for, I think it can be a good thing for you. However I think one should always keep track of how things are affecting their body and adjust things accordingly. If a medicine is reacting strangely to you then look into taking something else.

I put, I don't know. Why? Because it isn't up to me. It is up to you, your God, and your bishop to decide for YOU.

We have so much to be worried about so much to do and this is not a worry of mine. Green tea is part of my herbal tea's I take regulary...... I think we all get too crazy about this word of wosdom and throw the wisdom part out the window..... Use you personal logic... pray and ponder.... then if you still have a question ask you Bishop because you will get as many opinions as there are members on this forum. My decision is mine alone and is right for me after prayer and talking to my bishop.......

I'd rather err on the side of caution, personally. So I won't consume anything that has the word "tea" in its ingredients. When I drink herbal teas, I look at the ingredients and if it has "tea" as one of those then I skip that one.

BTW, "Tension Tamer" from Celestial Seasonings is AMAZING! Hot or cold I love that one.
