As ward clerk, my husband places all the orders for materials for the ward, and according to him (for the last several months), it will be the main course of study for RS/PH.

Ohmigosh, I just took a look at it. It looks so much easier to teach from than the Prophet manuals! YAY!!!

And as an extra bonus, all of the references to Mormon Doctrine have been deleted. There have been a few other changes that may be considered major or minor, depending on who you talk to.
Regarding the Handbooks, they are published in two parts. Book 1 is for bishops and stake presidents (as well as their counselors and administrative staff). Book 2 is for quorum and auxiliary presidents. The Church published a new edition of Book 1 in 2006 and have been working towards a release of a new version of Book 2 since then. It won't be a "new Handbook" per se, but will reflect the changes in policy made since the first release in 1998. They have not been distributing new copies of Book 2 for a little while (at least not in my stake).

You see, what's funny is I interpreted the order form as saying it will be used in PH and RS, but others didn't. I have been asked to assist the Clerk (who is new) and the Library to be sure all the right materials are ordered. They just released and called basically new PResidencies of every organization and none of them have really went through a cirriculum order, so he asked me to help them.
I just looked at the order form and we definately are using the new Gospel Principles manual in MP and RS on the 2nd and 3rd Sundays. I don't know what they were looking at, but I'll pass it on... thanks.
I'll be sure and get the right number ordered!

Order soon. Gospel Principles manuals ordered before the end of the year will be charged in two phases...half from this year's allotment and half from next year's*. You probably already knew that, but it can't hurt to have the reminder.
*applies only to orders from Church units.

The new Gospel Principles manual.
Did you all see this on the churches website?
"The Gospel Principles manual contains information on 47 core principles of the gospel for personal study and teaching. In 2010 and 2011, this manual will be used in Melchizedek Priesthood and Relief Society classes, as well as the Gospel Principles class for investigators and new members. The manual is available online in multiple media formats and languages."
I knew that a new edition was coming but I didn't know they would be using it in RS and MP. What does that mean for gospel essentials teachers like me? Does that mean some people will get a double dose? Or is my position just become obsolete? Does anyone know?

Some people will get a double dose.
The thing is, in EQ and RS they are to be taught in order. In Gospel Essentials the order is left up to the needs of the members attending the class... probably up to the mission leader or instructor.
So, it is very unlikely they will get a double dose in the same day.

Well, I would think since it'll only be 2nd and 3rd Sundays that the GP manual would be used in RS and MP, that it shouldn't be long before you get way ahead of where they are in the lessons.
I actually think this could be a really good thing for new members and investigators. They'll get a double dose of very important gospel lessons in short order, which should help the topics sink in. Also, they'll get to hear the lesson once with other newbies like themselves, and then again with more "seasoned" members who can offer new input on the subject during discussions.
It should be interesting!

As Ward Mission Leader I am also our Gospel Essentials teacher. No your position is not obsolete. It will still be taught in GE class as well as RS & PrstHood classes. Only 2 lessons per month will be taught in the other classes so it will take two years to go through it. While a few will get double doses of lessons I expect that they will be treated differently. GE class will continue to present the information from the perspective of the needs of new members or investigators. The RS&PrstHood will take a more in depth look at the same information.
I think it will be good for long term members to get reminded of the basic doctrine. Last year we had an adult seminary class one per week. I started bringing the GP book with me to correct members understanding of basic doctrine which had gotten misremembered or confused by some individuals over the years. This year the class is much more on track and I have only had to bring it out once. Also it might remind members that new comers don't have an understanding of many things they take for granted and they need to be more aware of this.
The biggest concern I have is when members attend GE class with an investigator or new member I have to keep reminding them to not go past the depth the manual is designed to teach. With more depth of the manual being taught it will be harder to keep members from going deeper then they should.
Our supply came in and I looked at them, they are the same as what we have been using other then the question for discussion is before the section instead of at the end and the chapters are no longer divided into units. They took out the hymn's but put in many more pictures which is nice. I didn't go through each chapter word for word but I skipped around and compared the new to the old and found no content differences.
