Default Political Discussions

Effective immediately political discussion has been suspended. The site rules have been changed to reflect this.

LDS.Net will allow political discussion, also long as all posts remain neutral with respect to partisan politics and candidate campaigns for public office. You may not use the site to show support, endorse, oppose or sanction any candidate. In addition, all posts must be respectful and sensitive to readers of all political beliefs and backgrounds. Any post that violates any of the above conditions will be dealt with according to the consequences of breaking the rules. Effective 9-24-09 political discussion has been temporarily suspended. Any threads of this nature will be closed.

While some may feel this is taking away their agency, may we remind everything that this is a privately owned site. They have a purpose and a mission. As also stated in the terms and conditions:

Quote:
The foundation encourages its members and staff to be informed about political issues and to be engaged in civic life
But first and foremost is the intent and purpose of a site owned and operated by TheMoreGoodFoundation. Again those are:

Illuminate the fruits of LDS Church members (Mormons)
Facilitate personal expressions of faith
Reach out to friends of other faiths using their vocabulary
Publish and market high quality LDS content
Provide a non-authoritative voice
Refer interested people to the Church

As Heather mentioned in another thread:

Quote:
There are so many forums out there where people can voice opinions on politics and Obama. Why take a forum that is so unique and make it just more of the same?

This thread will also not be used as a debate to voice opinions on the decision.

What changed? I thought this was always the rule...

Honestly Honor nothing has really changed.

This has always been part of the rules. In the past we have enforced the no candidate discussion during the election period allowing other political discussion. But both sides of the political spectrum have taken this too far and at the present time we have temporarily suspended political talk.

Does this mean we can't discuss current events? No. But when it becomes nothing more than a political debate, the line will be drawn.

Seems kind of ambiguous to me......I'll just avoid current events.

I'll believe it when I see it!

Let me add one thing before we, as moderators, start to get bombarded with reported posts. Those threads that were already open before this decision was made will remain open. May I remind everyone again about a rule that has never changed which I quoted earlier.

Kudos on the decision. When I first got here, I was surprised to learn that lds.net allowed us to brawl over politics in the first place, and figured this decision would eventually be made. Such threads really don't do anything to support the purpose of this site.

For people who like brawling over politics, Orson Scott Card maintains ornery.com - I suggest y'all give it a try.

Excellant; i think this needs to be permanant; there truely has been waaayyy to much going on and in frustration i actually did a post myself; politics is not a good thing to be discussed on a l.d.s discussion board.

Maybe you didn't get this memo?
