There are no set terms for bishops. In general, they serve around five years, some will go longer, some will go shorter. There is no line of succession as to who will be the next bishop. The Stake President looks at the ward roster, perhaps even interviews some people, prays long and hard about it, then submits a name to Church HQ for approval. Generally, the process is kept pretty confidential to keep speculation to a minimum, most members of the ward don't know a change is going to happen until right before it is announced.

A few years ago our Stake President was released. We had Elder Oaks visit our stake and to interview and call a new Stake President. During my interview Elder Oaks asked me how long I had been serving. I stated a little over 5 years. He then told me you know a call as a Bishop is to serve a minimum of 5 yrs. While he was laughing he then said unfornately there is no maximum amount of time. I then served for a few more years. It was a little over 7yrs by the time I was released.

For Family Wards it is 5 years, For Student/Single wards they server 3 years (and the stake President serves for 5).

There is no line of succession with Bishops (really with any other calling) expect for the prophet. Calls are done by revelation.

Again keeping in mind this is a "standard" not a rule. I know of someone who just got released from being in the Stake Presidency under the same Stake President after 12 years.

I have a friend who was a Bishop for 10 years solid. I also know another man who was a Bishop 3 times. The last time he served for four years.

Years ago, I had good friend of mine and once was my bishop who served for 14-years. It was not the first time and his last to serve in this calling since that stake not only divided, even the wards divided in moving the ward boundaries with membership growth. There is no exact timing but what is considered a minimum length.

My last Stake President told me that when they called him they asked him for a 7-9 year commitment.
