I just always found it difficult to find the use for a television show in which it's possible to have an open flame on the ocean floor...
...and that it had to be extinguished with a bucket of water.

Spongebob is a deeply moral individual with a strong sense of duty, with very strong convictions about right and wrong. I'm not a fan of Spongebob, but my kids like him, so we occasionally have him in our house.
Much of the crap you see on Nicolodeon and the Disney channel is totally amoral, where value is placed mainly on short-term fun, one-upping and getting your due. Name one father figure from anything cartoony these days that is not either missing or a goofy ignoramus.
My most-disliked show: The Suite Life of Zack and Cody - two rich brats live the high life on permanent vacation, with the employees of whatever suite or cruise ship, for role models or comic foils.

LM, I'll name the father from Wizards of Waverly Place. Unfortunately the kids are still brats.
I agree that Spongebob is NOT the worst out there, which is why our daughter is allowed to watch it. However I don't find it the BEST in children's programing either.

LM, Zack and Cody from The Suite Life aren't rich, in fact they end up in trouble often costing their mom her hard-earned money. They live in a one bedroom suite with mom on the couch. But they are brats so I don't let my daughter watch it much. Hanna Montana is a show I really can't stand. Some teen star running around in almost immodest clothes showcasing her amazing insensitivity until a moment of clarity turns her around just in time to fix the mess she caused? If my daughter was that dumb I wouldn't let her out of the house.

Spongebob. Wow. I am amazed the show has lasted this long. My kids occasionally watch it. I don't object unless they watch too much television. I honestly object to other shows, especially from cartoon network and the disney chanel. Luckily we are too busy to watch too much tv, so the problem kinda takes care of itself. I am glad that there is still good stuff on TV to choose from. The other night we watched "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown." My kids missed half the jokes and my husband and I laughed cuz we finally understood them.

If my nieces and nephews are any indication they don't need role models to decide that they want to run around naked. Of course that's at the beginning Blue's Clues stage not the Spongebob stage.

I think a lot of shows are like that, not even just kids' shows either. the characters have some problem and try to fix it the wrong way and screw stuff up even worse. the question for me is, is it a ridiculous enough problem to where I can't stand to watch the rest... then it goes off. I don't watch TV much besides when I'm bored, and even when I do I don't like a lot of what's on. I'd rather turn on Weather Channel than most stuff... besides Mythbusters and similar programs.
