Just a review, Joseph Smith was 14 years old at the time of the first vision. What silly things did I do before I was 14? My grandma told me that if I could put salt on a black birds tail it couldn't fly and I could catch it. I am sure they had many hours of fun watching me running around in the backyard with a salt shaker trying to get some salt on the birds tail. I was also taught how to use divining rods to find water before drilling wells. There are those who believe that they work.
To judge the boy Joseph Smith for using seer stones to try to find riches when he was 14 or younger is harsh. His family was very poor. I remember too as a kid digging for buried treasure. I always thought that some bandit or pirate had buried something near where I lived.
I think that most kids have dug for buried treasure at some time in their young life.
The Urim and Thumim were found with the gold plates shown to Joseph Smith four years after the first vision by Moroni.
