Default My dad lost his job

My parents need prayers. My mom was told a few days ago that she will most likely be laid off next month, after 25 years of faithful service to her company.

Today my dad was laid off from his job with no warning whatsoever. He was there for 10 years.

I don't know what they're going to do. They live paycheck to paycheck as it is, and recently my dad had to replace his car, which just couldn't be repaired anymore. Since they didn't have the cash on hand, they had to finance it so now they have car payments.

They are not members of the church, so I don't know that church employment services would help them (they're not members of any church). I know a lot of people in my area who are still looking for jobs after months of trying, so I don't have much hope that my dad will find something anytime soon (it took me almost a year to find a measly $8.00 an hour job). If my mom loses her job too, they'll lose their house and car and everything. Our whole family is just sick over this.

Please pray that my mom will keep her job and my dad will find something quick. This is the last thing in the world they needed right now.

Church employment is usually setup for members but they should try it anyway.

Yeah, I figured it was probably just for members. And didn't the church put a hiring freeze on it awhile back? I know the church employment agency was never able to help me get a job. They even told me that they had way more job seekers than job leads.

I'm sorry to hear that it's a bad time for everyone at the moment. Your mum has very likely already started applying for other jobs, but if she hasn't then she should - it's an advantage to currently be employed when looking for another job, so make the most of the next month.

I've never used any church employment advice services and those who I know who have found them useless, as it appears you did too. However there is no disadvantage to trying.

Seeing as I'm still a padawan, there are people on this board who are going to be far more knowledgeable and more able to give advice than me on this subject, but something I've done for the past 6 years with excellent results each time (including once in this recession) is treat job hunting as a full time job. They would normally be at work for 8 or more hours a day, so there is no excuse not to spend at least 8 hours a day, five days a week job hunting.

Also, once they have their CV (resume) written up, they might want to get them checked over by a recruitment specialist - their advice is invaluable.

MM, No! There are inside information is being passed on job openings within different areas. which are passed to each region rep and then on to each stake.

Have your father check this site.... USAJOBS - The Federal Government's Official Jobs Site

Ouch. OuchOuchOuch. Dang - I wish I had something helpful to say, but all my advice is about 10 years too late. Always have a plan B. If you place faith in your employer, you'll learn the consequences of misplaced faith. Debt = slavery = something to be avoided.

I suppose by way of realistic advice, perhaps they could sell the house and car and move in with one of their children?

My sister and I have actually been trying to get them to sell their house for awhile. Their neighborhood has gone so downhill that we're worried about their safety (which is such a shame, as it was a wonderful neighborhood when we were growing up). They still have a small mortgage, but probably have enough equity by now to downsize a bit and have a decent chunk left over (they're in a small 3-bedroom, so they could go down to a 2-bedroom or even a large 1-bedroom). Moving in with us would be okay for a little while, but it would be really packed (and my sister is already living with her mother-in-law). But yeah, we would definitely not allow them to be homeless.

I don't know if my mom has started looking for a new job yet. Honestly, I think she's still in shock. She just sounds absolutely shell-shocked when I talk to her.
