Default Pigeon are Cheap Food

I have raised a lot of pigeons as a young Boy. If a pigeon lost a lot of races, or was getting old, we would kill and eat the pigeon. My DAD told me the pigeon is a member of the quail family and taste like chicken - Maybe, bland and depends on how you cook it.

So if your in an urban situation, some home made box bird traps might be worth the while. Or at least have the supplies on hand to build some box bird traps.

I'll just go down to the river and catch myself a duck. They're very trusting of people because we feed them. :P

Yes, I wonder that too Willow. I sure wouldn't want to eat any of the pigeons I see in our town centre eating whatever food people have dropped on the ground.

My hubby calls pigeons 'rats with wings'.

What's wrong with a little Soylent Green in your diet? You could make your own blend at home, from the noisy neighbors down the hall. Some people might say it tastes gamey, but I think that with enough bbq sauce you could make it taste like chicken, or ribs even. Mmmmmmm, ribs. Especially with Famous Dave's BBQ sauce.

Great! Now I've made myself hungry. Gotta go!!!!

Mullenite,

Cool! Actually I was sort of referring to President Monson, and a story about how he was a little upset that they removed the Pigeon Merit Badge from the Boy Scout program some years ago. Apparently, he had quite an interest in raising pigeons as a hobby for a number of years. Some were even prize show pigeons.

Word.

It might be worth noting here, that by the time the Germans lost the war the country was in total ruin. I read once that rabbits are what saved most of the folks over there. The report further explained that one of the reasons that it worked so well is that live rabbits require no refrigeration and just happened to fall into the handy 1 to 2 pound meal size. Just right to prevent waste. I personally think if I or my family were near starvation, pigeons would probably seem like a prize winning meat :-)

I have spent time inside of China, and one of the things I always noted over there is that there are very rarely any birds seen wandering in the trees and streets of those great cities like here in the US. Not just pigeons, any birds the trees are so silent over there!
