Default Plagues......all is well the US.....

A couple of weeks ago in bishopric meeting we got to talking about emergency preparedness. The subject of plagues came up and the bishop said "I don't think that a plague is very likely". I courteously responded that "I disagree. The Lord and His prophets have told us that they WILL happen." He said "You know...you're right. I guess that I am always naturally optimistic and don't think that those things will happen...but we know they will. Then he said that "a morning ago I kept getting the picture in my mind of a flu epidemic back in the 30's with everyone wearing masks. It could happen again just like that".

What many would call doom and gloom is really just the words of a loving Father in Heaven...what many would call optimism is in reality fulfillment of the "all is well in Zion" mentality.

I watched a show on the black plague on the history channel last night. It focused on the plague in Europe in the 14th century. Here's in a nutshell what I got out of it that could be telling for us.

1. In many places the plague was preceded by a famine.
2. The plague could kill a person all within a day.
3. People got used to everyone dying around them. Historians argue about what percentage of people died...but most say at least 50%-70%.
4. Unseemly people came out of the woodwork and started to loot and live a life of the flesh.
5. People turned more to God...or turned from Him.
6. The dead created a problem as burial was difficult. Imagine what would happen now!!
7. People got back to living and married and quickly had more children. Fertility was up.
8. In Italy where the famine had been pretty extreme...when the population had dramatically decreased they found that they had plenty of food and to spare...and they started growing luxury foods.
9. With so many dead...lots of land came available making it possible for even the very poor to become land owners.
10. With so many surfs now able to have their own land...they no longer had to work for the nobles. The nobles were forced to earn their own bread by the sweat of their brow.
11. A lot less nobles died because they were able to keep themselves separated from the sick masses.
12. Many nobles bought now out of work knights to pillage villages for their sustainance.
13. Many knights also took it upon themselves to make their living by pillaging on their own accord.

Here in Colorado, I hear three or four times a year about cases of Bubonic Plague showing up. Of course, it's easily treated with standard antibiotics these days. But yeah, should something disrupt our easy access to medication, that could be quite a problem.

That would be the sweetest thing of all.

Ohhh....
If I were a rich man...

Is this your personal experience?
