Default canning jars ?

My husband goes to garage sales almost every Friday and Saturday and has been asking for canning jars. He's brought me about 50 dozen already for 0.25 each. This weekend he came in with some quart mason jars that have an abnormal mouth size. The mouth on these is smaller than a regular size lid.

All I've seen at the stores are the Wide Mouth lids and Regular lids. Anyone know where I can get lids to fit these 'small' mouth jars?

I live in Texas and all the stores have both the wide mouth and regular mouth lids and rings but these are smaller than the regular mouth. I've never seen any like this before.

Default Easy answer

Whoever made them e.g., Ball, Kerr, some odd ball make, can give you a place to get lids. Be careful, that the jars are not chipped, and are good quality. Old Kerr and Ball jars last almost forever, but some, like the spaghetti sauce in one gets from the canner, should not be used again, as they can break open spontaneously (word from the canner mgr. himself). Have fun!

You have 600 jars?? That is amazing!

Are those really Mason jars? Check the manufacturer - also check the color. I had a bunch of these and they used the wire and glass lids. Used them for holding dry gains as you can not seal them anymore. The reason I could not use them for pressure or cold water bath canning is they had lead in them- they were blue.

All of the jars are Mason, Ball or Kerr. The ones I need lids for are Mason so I'll call them tomorrow.
I have only kept 20 cases for myself. When word got out that my hubby was picking them up for a quarter each, all the women in my ward asked if he could keep looking for them since he goes to all the garage sales anyway. We're supplying everyone in the ward now.

Default Congrats

That is great that they are not some off brand. Be very sure that they are not chipped, and if so discard. Now don't do like a sister in our Stake did with her 3 55 gallon drums. She spoke in Stake Conf. and said that if the SP wanted she had 1165 gallons of fresh air in case he needed it. (her husband filled up the drums that week!) Hee Hee
