Default Don't shift into fear mode

There is a very good article in Mormon Times published by Deseret News that talks about the "Fear Mode" that so many are pushing.

Its called Pushing for the Pantry. Here are some quotes from the article ...

1) "Don't shift to fear mode. Just continue to do your best."

2) "The message was simplified and meant to encourage. Members were counseled that sustained, "small" efforts would go a long way toward fulfilling the commandment to establish a food storage and realizing the blessings of preparing for adversity. One year later, that counsel looms large.

Yep, tell your wife not to be skeeered! But continue to work on the food storage. I think its more about attitude. One of the first things I teach in emergency preparedness is NOT to panic.

So true! Stay calm, and much can be accomplished. Panic, and chaos reigns!

Thank you. I agree with you that publishing doom and gloom is unnecessary. It is important to stay educated and up to speed on current events, but waving a giant red flag like there's no tomorrow seems inappropriate. I hope we can all be vigilant in keeping up with current events, educate ourselves better on economic and political maneuvering and always be prepared or work on being prepared for it.

We agree, yep, posting events make sense. Prophecy by someone with no authority is over the line in my opinion.

The goal that most of us in preparedness really want is for people to start preparing with food storage etc. If we push too hard and present wild predictions, we lose credibility and thus nothing gets done.

This is why you'll see me use historic events to encourage people to prepare. Good examples are the Teton dam break, Katrina and the Asian Tsunami. It is my firm belief that once people start to prepare, the spirit will guide them, and that’s all I am looking for! I've seen it happen with many members and its a wonderful sight.

A sense of urgency is not the same is being scared. In my opinion, being scared has a note of hopelessness. This is not the case with Preparedness and Heavenly Father's plan in my opinion. One can have a sense of urgency while searching to fulfill their 1 year supply for example. This is the correct motivation in my opinion.

Ultimately, its a message of hope. Which should be familiar to every latter-day saint. This is in fact the connection between temporal preparedness and spiritual preparedness spoke about in Matthew 25.

Even though we have personal revelations, we can collaborated, we can compare with what we receive. I for one, have no problem in listening to someone elses testimony, visions, dreams, inspirations, or viewpoints; I will compare it to what I was given, to those of the prophets, or called by the same.

Mode is the vehicle by which preparation is best utilised. There are plenty of cases where people have adequate preparation but not been adequately prepared.

I like doom and gloom. That's what nudged me into taking my food storage from a six months supply to a two year supply (and three on the powdered milk). I started seeing doom and gloom reports last fall and that's all it took to put me into food storage hypermode. Now I feel fantastic knowing I'm prepared. I even stocked up on non-food items, clothes, blankets, etc. (and water I was fortunate to kick into hypermode starting last fall before the prices really shot up. I sleep well at night now.
