just to add since many are speaking of the "deterrent" sound of a shotgun.

Best thing might be a big dog. The have the deterrent sound, look, protect the home even when your gone and can be better at determining friend of foe then a startled, scared person at 2 am.

Go with the 9mm (If you can get both).

The reason I say 9mm is because.......

1. It can take only one hand to operate a handgun while leaving the other hand free to
open doors and hold a flashlight etc.......

2. carry more rounds

3. faster reloads

4. Easy to carry / Concealed carry

5. Very easy to learn and become proficient.

Don't get either one unless you are prepared to practice and gain some level of proficiency. Guns are dangerous unless you can gain some familiarity, and arguments about stopping power etc are silly unless the user is somewhat proficient.

I own 50+ firearms so I'm not anti-gun. If you do decide to purchase a firearm, go to one of the many self defense and safety classes available and learn to use it.

mrmarklin has it correct. Like most tools you have to know how to use them safely if they are to be useful. You also need to have made the mental decision how far you are prepared to go with that tool.

It is good to hear from so many people giving advice about guns and what would work for a woman. We currently don't have any guns in our house, mainly because it is not something we have planned for yet. This is not to say that we would be adverse to having a gun. Currently our home protection includes two large dogs that sleep with us at night, and a large collection of swords and other metal weapons. Truthfully the weapons were obtained more because we like sharp pointy objects rather than for home protection. As it relates to guns, I would not mind getting a gun for home protection and or hunting, deer is tasty. This looks like a good thread to look over for if or when we do decide to get a gun.
