In every major disaster, the need for a firearm is always UNDER stated by the media (they hate guns so the media avoids making guns look good at all costs), but if you've ever actually BEEN in a disaster, you know that within hours (sometimes within minutes) you quickly realize that YOU are going to need to protect your property or maybe even your life and the lives of your family. Some of you may live in high crime urban areas, and thus, sadly you need to be prepared every day.
I have an uncle who lived in L.A. during the riots and he was calm as a summer's morning because he was prepared, but we laugh to this day about all of his leftist friends/acquaintances who preached how "evil" guns are, but when the riots broke out, they ran so fast to the gun stores they burned holes in their loafers

. Not only that, but the best part came when these hypocrites were reminded that commie-fornia had an unconstitutional waiting period (which THEY helped pass), which meant they were totally defenseless as mobs were going around killing, raping, burning, stealing etc.
I believe every latter day saint who wishes to follow the commandment to be prepared, should have a few effective firearms for WHEN disasters happen. Remember, U.S. courts have ruled over and over for at least a century that government has NO DUTY TO PROTECT YOU. People have tried to sue the police for not protecting them and it never works.
My suggestions for proper preparedness:
1. A few good 9mm handguns and at least a few hundred rounds of ammunition. There's no need to spend gobs of $$$ either, I only paid $300 for my S&W Sigma.
2. A good semi auto rifle that "means business" such as an AR, an AK, or an SKS, and at least 500 rounds of ammunition. The AK and SKS rifles are my favorites for their reliability and low cost.
3. A good semi auto .22 rifle for your kids who are not able to handle the above rifles. The katrina victims learned why you need a good .22 rifle: sick, desperate, and violent animals roaming around. Thousands were stuck in their flooded homes for weeks. .22 rifles are cheap to shoot
