Step 1: Breath in and out
Step 2: Get Organized with a really awesome binder that has all your lists and info and blank paper
Step 3: Your RS pres will usually tell you what she needs .
Pretty soon you will be like Radar on MASH and can read her mind moments before hand!
There should be a job description in the RS handbook and you should have regular presidency meetings where you get to ask a lot of questions. Each new presidency pretty much figures out how to operate in unique ways. It is all about making sure that Sunday happens, the rolls are taken, and everyone is informed. Once you get your legs under you, it is really a breeze! And if I were you, I might even call the Stake RS sec. and ask for a little tutorial.

I have never been a RS secretary so have no knowledge to base a response on.

Talk to the president, and the bishop can help. Usually secretary keeps track of paper work. If it be the rolls, taking some minutes in meetings, maybe even helping out with Visiting teaching assignments.
Like others suggested get organized and try to stay on top of things. For me with any calling I try to figure out how a computer can help me stay more organized. Use what ever resources you have.

I'm clueless too. I know that our secretary takes roll, she sends out e-mails to the sisters from the Relief Society (our ward has its own e-mail address for this), she puts hand-outs in the folders where the roll sheets are, and I'm sure she does more, but not having done that calling, I don't know what else she does.
Please don't feel bad that people didn't respond right away. This forum is huge and sometimes people don't reply because they just don't feel qualified to answer. Welcome to the board!

That would be me!!! I have never been in Relief Society. I have spent the last ten years (since re-activating) in Primary and Nursery...and one year as YW counselor.
I'm sorry you felt ignored...

I'm currently the RS Pres and I can tell you what my secretary does.
Takes minutes at RS Presidency meetings
Sends out birthday cards to every RS member
Calls to see if the VT has been done
Takes attendance every week
Helps set up for all the Enrichment activities
Helps keep me and my counselors sane.

A description of every calling and their responsibilities is in the Bishop's handbook. There are also handbooks for other callings such as; Relief Society President, Primary President, Young Men's President, etc, and in each of these handbooks is a description of the responsibilities for each calling under their authority.
Check with your RS president about this description (She should share it with you) or ask for a copy of your calling description from the Bishop.
In our ward a copy of this description is given when the calling is extended.

I was called to be Relief Society Secretary when I was 19. It was a pretty frightening calling for me so I can understand your concern. The truth is, your Relief Society Pres will tell you exactly what she expects of you. Just be sure to stay organized. The best advise I can give you is to step back and watch your RS presidency at work, learn from them and learn to Love them, they are your best resource for help.
When I was called to RS/Sec, the church was much different than it is today. Back then we had to take roll not only in RS, but we also took roll of all the Women who attended Sacrament Meeting and Sunday School. It was quite a chore trying to learn so many peoples names, especially if they only atteneded once in while. The most wonderful blessing was that I knew so many sisters, after 6 months or so I knew every sister in the wards name.
Good luck to you, you'll love this calling.
