Default Bodybuilding?

I think this is a sport, but what is all of your opinions on it?

Is it an appropriate activity for LDS folks? In the public/competetive realm I mean. I kow many of us bodybuild or strength train. But what about competition and the apparent imodesty that goes with the activity?

A former Mr. Olympia is LDS. (Good for him, he worked hard at it.)

Would it be something you could do?

Jon

I've been a bodybuilder/fitness enthusiast for over twenty years. I'm not huge and I've never competed or done it professionally, but I thoroughly enjoy weightlifting, cross training, plyometrics, cardio, yoga and anything that fine tunes and improves my health, nutrition and fitness. I think it's appropriate, though some might argue that it's excessive use of time and resources or that bodybuilders are little more than vain. I plan on being in the best shape of my life when I turn 40 next year. I think I'm in pretty good shape right now, though.

If you mean is it something I would do, sure. Not like posing naked or anything. I have worked out for about 25 years. I like Skalenfehl work to be in my best shape line upon line. I don't think it is a one day or one year event but something you work on improving each year. At 54 I am near my best shape ever. The picture in my post is when I was 47. Having studied bodybuilding for many years the guys you see in competitions do not look like that all the time. They actually look like big bloated blobs most of the time until they diet down for a show. You can't pack on muscle while being as lean as they are when they compete.

It's definitely a lifestyle. It will consume a lot of your time, money (you will eat lots and lots, especially protein), and energy if you want to do it professionally.

I have spent many years in the gym, or on the floor doing sit ups and press ups, or jogging, or jumping rope. When I was 19 (25 years ago...) I would have put my physqiue up against just about anyone my age who worked out and was dianobol free. I agree it is a lifestyle, I have never had the urge to compete, but the posing brief was always a drawback. Ten years ago I power lifted and thought about competing in that venue, but then didn't. (I'm kind of shy...)

Anyway, thanks for the posts.

Jon

I am 43 and have been lifting consistently since 1996..... I am still benching around 325lbs as a max...but the heavy weights really bother my joints now. I am going to really focus on cardio and leaning up. I am around 215lbs and am going to slim down to around 185lbs.

I love to lift. But could never compete. Too much hair to shave.

I'm fine with LDS that want to compete in bodybuilding. I don't compete in that sport, but I do a great deal of working out with free weights and my bowflex! I think that there are a tremendous number of health benefits associated with working to stay in shape that everyone should be encouraged to engage it on some level!

I would like to see more people riding a bike or walking and jogging when time permits.......as these activities can also really help ones fitness and stamina! .......especially during this period of inflated and outlandish gas prices!

Hi all,

I ride my bike often but may do some weight lifting. My wife is part of Curves and she said it has been a wonderfull experaince ruducing her stress levels. I want to do this because some times I am a hot head. Wife says I get into fits some times but it could be my shuger levels. Honestly it is a combination of factors but weight training may help me to be more relaxed and calm down under work stress.

One of the requirments I would love my city to do is open up more off road bike lanes. Come to think about it there is hardly any bike lanes. It would make getting around the city alot less stressfull and dangerous. A mountain biker just feel off his bike the other day and got run over by a utility trailer. Did not make it.
