It is real. It's a tubifex worm colony. They grow in moist, warm places and love human waste to feed upon. They're fairly common in the sewers.

It looks like this area usually floods, which is why the tubifex worm colony grew here, and that the water-level is currently pretty low.

It's not a joke. It's a freaking tubifex worm colony. That's it. They're not even that uncommon. They just happen to be in an area that's not underwater currently.
