I am fluent in Spanish. I was assigned a one year tour of duty in Korea by the US Army back in 1965 where I learned to read and write Korean but speak only enough to get by.

Jesus the Christ by Talmage, Mutiny on the Bounty by Nordoff and Hall(three volumes), Horatio Hornblower by Forester(eleven volumes)...

I love all of Andre Rieu's music; and a long list of fifties' and sixties' rock and roll and slow dreamy pieces; also all of John Philip Sousa's marches, patriotic and classical music and all of Bach's Brandenberg Concertos. My favorite song is "I love You Because" by Al Martino which I dedicate to my wife, my eternal soul mate, who patiently and unflinchingly shared my numberless lifelong crucial trials and tribulations.

$crooge (1968), Bird of Paradise (1942), Son of Fury (1942), Horatio Hornblower series, Master and Commander, Star Trek (TOS), Enterprise, Star Wars, Stargate Series...

In years past I held a serious interest in collecting coins and stamps of the United States and coins of Mexico. World Comet Halley and Pitcairn Island stamps also held my interest. Today my interest lies in updating my website bluelancervalley.org and some traveling. I am currently writing my book titled "Memoirs of a Young Soldier, My one year growing up in 1965 Korea," which just about half will consist of photographs. I love photography and my four children with currently fourteen grandchildren are a little more patient to my photo-taking with my modern digital than with my SLR of the eighties and nineties.

Nice to hear from you...I would imagine writing a book would keep you very busy!  Keep up the good work.

Jgg,

How cool to speak Korean as well.  I understand completely what you mean that Italian is similar.  On a visit to Italy I was the only one of our group able to communicate, in my horrible Spanish no less!  lol  The Italian people were so accomadating and kind, they were such a pleasure to visit with!

BTW, I got the message just fine... you did good!  lol

Hi, Although I served in Korea forty-three years ago, I still remember much of it.  I've caught myself "answering" and "asking" of myself as I "think" in Korean.  When I approach people who appear Korean, I address and introduce myself in their language and ask daily small talk questions. At first they are really surprised (some become mute similarly as when in their country) to know someone from out of nowhere is attempting to communicate with them!!

I have been trying to word my testimony and all I can come up with is my witness of the Gospel, my love and knowledge of the divinity of God and Jesus Christ.  Anything else I would need the Spirit to mouth it for me.

We met a missionary from Brazil who spoke Portugese at Temple Square and we were able to communicate with her and make ourselves understood.  I spoke to an Italian missionary once and while the language is different, yet of romantic "origin," we were able to make ourselves understood.

Once you become better in Spanish you will be surprised how much you can decifer or catch main ideas of many other languages.  JGG

PS  I'm new at messaging and hope this note gets through, I'll catch-on one day, LOL

Thanks for adding me to your list of friends.  I am so jealous... I wish that I could claim to be fluent in Spanish!  Everytime one of my friends, who has served a Spanish speaking mission, happens over to my house I make them help me practice my horrible Spanish!  Perhaps someday I will actually stop tranlating from English to Spanish and actually THINK Espanol!  I need more faith!  lol
