The LDS Temples are sacred. What goes on inside of them is sacred, not secret. Several different things come to my mind when I think of the temples:
1. A source of strength and power in rough, troubled times.
2. Generations linked in love - sealed forever.
3. The temple is a place of peace.
4. The temple is a place of learning - where we learn more about God and His plan for us.
5. Receive the personal blessings.
6. Prayers are answered - revelation occurs.
7. And instruction by the Spirit takes place.
I love attending the temple. My day, and week goes so much better, if I start the day or week out with a trip to the temple. Iside I feel such peace and harmony. All of the outside worldly cares are gone, and you are left with peace in your heart and soul.
No, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not build new temples in areas where there are no church members. The church builds the temples in locations populated with church members to make their temple trips easier, more convenient.
Who can enter the temples? Worthy church members who have been a member for one year or more. What do I mean by "worthy?"
Active members of the LDS church who keep Gods commandments and are prepared to make and keep sacred temple covenants. Those who are worthy receive a temple recommend from their Bishop or Branch President, which allows them to enter the temple.
To secure a temple recommend, the church member must also have demonstrated his eligibility, and that eligibility is based on personal worthiness. Once granted, it is not in place forever, the temple recommend is good for two years. It is subject to forfeiture if the member does anything which would disqualify him or her for its privileges.
Eligibility for a temple recommend is based on consistent personal behavior, on the goodness of one’s life. It is not concerned with money matters, but rather with things of eternity.
I'd like to leave with you, my personal testimony about the sacred temple. The Mormon temples bear the words “The House of the Lord, Holiness to the Lord.” This is a sacred reminder of holy places that has roots that go back to the Old Testament. I leave this with you, in the name of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
