Written statements of faith:

SUBJECT: Things that made me go & serve
LOCATION: Bacolod, Philippines
In Primary, we used to sing "I Hope They Call Me On A Mission", but I always believed that full-time mission is just optional for sisters, as it is. Late into my teens, the curiosity and desire to serve came in an unexpected way. There was this guy I admired who, when he was about to turn nineteen, took a break from college, applied for a full-time mission, and went to serve out there. Not every young man does that. So I was impressed. Then I got curious. I wanted to have an idea of the kind of life he was having then, the experiences he was having in the mission field. Fortunately, I got called to serve as a stake missionary, so I started working with the missionaries in my ward. The more I worked with them, the more I enjoyed doing it. Then, we had a one-day mission activity. I was assigned to go tracting with two other stake missionaries. Since the house of a non-LDS friend was within the vicinity, I decided to try sharing the gospel with her. We placed a Book of Mormon, and got a schedule with her to meet the full-time missionaries for the discussions. The next week, the missionaries and I met with her to teach the first discussion. If there was someone who was most touched by the Spirit at that discussion, it must have been me. I felt a different kind of joy in my heart that I've never felt before. I felt so happy, but I couldn't explain exactly why I was happy. Then I remembered Doctrine and Covenants 18 verses 10, 15-16, which we used to memorize in Seminary class. At that very moment, I learned for myself that that scripture is true. That's when I knew that I have to go and serve a full time mission...because the worth of each soul is so great and, indeed, how great shall be your joy if you can bring even just one soul back to our Heavenly Father's kingdom. That non-LDS friend of mine has never met the missionaries again for another discussion and has not accepted the gospel until now. But I know that meeting was never in vain. I know the Spirit was there and there was a conversion that took place. The conversion was not in my friend's heart, but in mine. Two years after that discussion, I returned home from my mission, with honor, and how great was my joy.
