The early saints were asked to gather in a couple of different places throughout Joseph Smith’s lifetime. Finally, with the persecution still growing they were asked to journey through the wilderness to a place in the west, Salt Lake City.  This journey to Salt Lake City has many similarities with the Moses and the Children of Israel’s exodus from Egypt.

Brigham Young was the modern Moses, and he prepared and organized the saints to move West the same way Moses prepared his people to move from Egypt to Mount Sinai. Both of these groups left their homes because of persecution and oppression. Similarly, both groups traversed mountains, desserts, and valleys before they could reach their destinations, which were untamed and uncultivated. It is fascinating to read in the New Testament. One of the more fascinating things is when I try to pick out where the author is quoting. With the help of one of my teachers, I’ve discovered an early Christian hymn in John 1:1-5. 7-14, 16. It really is quite beautiful; I can only imagine what it sounded like in its original language. In my doctrine and covenants class we have been discussing how The Exodus out of Egypt parallels the Restoration Exodus of the saints. I was quite surprised of how many similarities there were and to me it just shows the hand of the Lord in His work.
