They both read from the same bible but came to different conclusions. Both prayed to the same God and saw His hand fighting for their side.
Somehow Lincoln managed, perhaps out of necessity, to look from a less authoritative position on what God's will was and just accept that both prayers couldnt' be simultaneously answered and that perhaps they didn't really know God's will.
