A little Athens, a little Rome
Posted On 02/13/2009 10:14:40 by the-durf
Brian gave the opening prayer in class on Wednesday, and in it he expressed gratitude for the sacrifices Dr. Holzapfel made to teach us.
This spurred Dr. Holzapfel to briefly mention how so many of the teachers here sacrifice to be at byu because they want to be BYU.  Many other colleges offer higher salaries, focus more on research instead of teaching, and offer more secular pristege (though not by much most of the time.)  Here at BYU, most o... Zion
Posted On 02/02/2009 21:29:02 by spirited_sprite
My favorite scripture mastery scripture in seminary Old Testament year was Moses 7:18 because I enjoy the idea of having Zion in a family situation.  In my Book of Mormon class last semester the focus of discussions about Zion were exciting and new, but also fell into line with the way I like to think about Zion.  Dr. Holzapfel's lectures were a completely different thing.  I have never thought of Zion as a geographical place before.  This, for me, is probably because I don't... Posted On 12/15/2008 16:08:55 by tom6a
Even eight years after returning to the United States, the view of Jerusalem’s Old City from the top of the Mount of Olives remained vivid in author Erin Tolman’s mind, as did the sound of gunfire and sirens which marked the beginning of the Second Intifada in September 2000.

Unable to let the memories remain only in her journal, Tolman wrot e a series of thirty-eight vignettes describing her semester as a student at the Brigham Young University Jerusale... Read More

Learning Symbolism Through Art
Posted On 10/30/2008 23:29:10 by Jonathan_A
Today I attended a presentation in BYU's museum of art about its religious collection.  I had seen the collection before but I had not had somebody explain the pieces to me.  While most of the works actually are not done by members of the Church of Jesus Christ, all are tastefully done and contain lots of messages in the form of symbolism.  Quite a few of them are from Middle Ages, and only one of them actually was a modern work.
