The Back Fence
Posted On 01/31/2008 09:33:29 by checkerboy
There was a little boy with a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, to hammer a nail in the back fence.

By the end of the first day the had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over time, the boy decided that it was easier to hold his temper than to drive nails into fence posts.

Finally, a day came when the boy didn't lose his temper. When he told his fater, he congratulated him, and told the boy to pull out one nail each day he... Read More

How to Catch a Monkey
Posted On 01/30/2008 09:43:25 by checkerboy
In India people catch monkeys by setting out a small box with a tasty nut in it. Well if you place both in boiling water you get two different outcomes.
Carrots will soften, while eggs harden.

So which are you a carrot or an egg?
When placed in adversity and... Read More

Don't Beat Up the Swimmer
Posted On 01/24/2008 10:18:50 by checkerboy
When a battered, weary swimmer tries valiantly to get back to shore, after having fought strong winds and rough waves, which he probably never should have challenged in the first place; those of us who might have had better judgment or perhaps, simply better luck, ought not to row out to his side, beat him on the head with our oars and shove him back underwater. That’s not what boats are made for. But that is what we do to each other.

Love and Faith
Posted On 01/22/2008 09:14:05 by checkerboy
Where there is no faith, there can be no love. Love, like faith, demands confidence without assurance. As with all things spiritual, there can be no certitude, for faith goes beyond reason and evidence, and love is above even these.
If we need them, there are many simple proofs of the existence of love in our daily lives: we plant a seed and it becomes a flower; we touch someone and they grow in strength; we wipe away tears and learn to smile again.
We begin to be comfortable with love o... Read More
