Do you have a pioneer heritage?

With Pioneer Day fast approaching on the 24th of July.  I thought it might be appropriate to talk about the wonderful Pioneer heritage that we each have as members of the church.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is made up of pioneers.  From the very beginning of its roots in New York, with Joseph Smith,  to the outer most reaches of the world, as people hear the gospel for the first time in their lives and join the church, pioneers can be seen.

Pioneer Woman and Girl

Pioneers come in all shapes and sizes.  They can be all ages. They all have three things in common:

To be a pioneer it takes, faith.  Faith allows them to proceed into the dark and not look back.

To be a pioneer it takes hope.  Hope is what they need to keep going.

To be a pioneer it take charity.  Charity is the spirit that they have when they desire to make it easier for those who follow.

You don’t have to push a handcart,

Leave your fam’ly dear,

Or walk a thousand miles or more

To be a pioneer!

You do need to have great courage,

Faith to conquer fear,

And work with might for a cause that’s right

To be a pioneer!

We are marching, ever marching.

We are marching, ever marching,

Marching onward, ever onward.

We are pioneers;

Ruth Muir Gardner, 1927–1999

Are you a pioneer?

Thank you for reminding us of our pioneer heritage and that we can all be pioneers. You can read a little about my heritage of early LDS pioneers in My Personal Beliefs on my page. My wife is a convert and is the only member among her immediate family of Dutch immigrants to America. She is definitely a pioneer. When you think about how we (LDS) are such a small percentage of the world's population and that some day the church will fill the entire Earth that makes us all, who are working to build up the kingdom in any way, pioneers. I don't think that "fill up the Earth" means we will ever be a majority before the Savior's Aecond Coming, but we will be every where... marching onward, ever onward.

UintahJack,

I, like you, think that our job as modern day pioneers is one of continued progression.  The Lord is counting on us to keep marching onward, just as we counted on the pioneers before us.  Our job is that of a pioneer.

Thanks for the insights you have posted.

JoshMeister,

I think that you are a wonderful example of a pioneer.  I think that it is so admirable that after joining the church in your teens you then chose to serve a mission as well.  I know that your pioneering efforts will be felt by many for generations to come!  Thanks for posting!

My wife has pioneer heritage dating back to the early days of the restored Church.  She introduced me to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints about 10 years ago, and I have been a member for close to 8 years.  We both served missions, and we have been married for 4 years and currently have 2 children.  InTheDoghouse asked me to post my conversion story, but you can find more of the details in my profile by clicking on my avatar.

If we are laboring diligently in the Lord's service and forging a path for others to find the Gospel, then we are indeed pioneers. One day, people may look upon our generation and time and reflect on how difficult and trying it must have been for those Saints. Will our work leave future generations inspired to lengthen their stride, to try each day to be a little better than the day before? I sure hope so. The early pioneers have left us some incredibly big shoes to fill. May our loving Father in heaven inspire each of us to strive to be like the Savior and let our light so shine that all may see it and will desire to come unto Christ.

Bytor2112,

I also have a love and respect for our early pioneers.  I come from a long line of them on my mothers side, but my father is a pioneer just like you are, first generation LDS.

I believe your diligent service today and the example you set for your future posterity and others is just as important as the service and example set by the pioneers before us.

I think that to be diligent in todays world is filling "some pretty big shoes" too!

Thanks for your insights.

DallinD,

I am not sure who that is a picture of, I just loved it when I found it on Google Images under Pioneers.  I love the fact that it is showing two stages in the life of a pioneer woman.  Did you check out the buffalo chips that they were collecting?  I know that they did that for fuel.  I just simply loved the picture.  I loved the doll in the little girls hand as well.  This is exactly how I pictured Pioneer Women life.
