It seems almost certain that David Archuletta will be crowned the next "American Idol" tonight, after his 'knockout' performance on Tuesday night.
David Archuletta is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He lives about seven miles from me, in Murray Utah. When he was in town two weeks ago, he was asked if he intended to serve a mission for the Church. (many LDS teens serve a two year mission when they reach 18 years old). David answered innocently and truthfully, "I feel like I already am."
David will be a great ambassador for the Church wherever he goes in his music career, just as The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has been a worldwide ambassador.
David Archuletta reminds me a lot of Elvis Presley. He can take a ballad and put his whole heart and soul and being into it. When he performed "Love Me Tender", a few weeks ago, it was like watching a young Elvis Presley. Will David Archuletta become the "Mormon Elvis"?
Not too many know that near the end of his life, Elvis Presley was looking into the LDS Church. He wanted to be baptized and he had a Book of Mormon at his bedside when he died. Here is a very interesting article from "The Deseret Morning News" about this story. There is actually a film being made about it, titled "Tears of a King".

I believe this is one of my most favorite scriptures, I love the directions and the sacred promises. It says to me that living in perfect hope and Light, with the Love of God and man, will enable us to live the plan of happiness, here on earth and eternally with our Heavenly Father. Forever. Ne. 31: 20 20 Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life. “If we are true and faithful in this life, we may obtain eternal life. … Eternal life is to gain exaltation in the highest heaven and live in the family unit.”—Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, quoted in Ensign, Mar. 2002, 22.
“Patient endurance permits us to cling to our faith in the Lord and our faith in His timing when we are being tossed about by the surf of circumstance. Even when a seeming undertow grasps us, somehow, in the tumbling, we are being carried forward.”—Elder Neal A. Maxwell of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, quoted in Ensign, May 1990, 34. http://dayofpraise.blogspot.com/

This is one of my most favorite hymns by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. It was such a comfort to me as, last week, I went through a six day hospital stay for cancer surgery. It is so amazing what you can go through with God with you! "Here's my heart, Lord, oh take and seal it, seal it for the courts above!" God's Grace is ALL I ever need. Come, thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace; streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it, mount of thy redeeming love. Here I raise mine Ebenezer; hither by thy help I'm come; and I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God; he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood. O to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be! Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; here's my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above. http://dayofpraise.blogspot.com/

We've all heard and seen the recent media circus concerning the Texas Raid on the FLDS 'Polygamy Cult' at their YFZ Ranch Compound in Eldorado, Texas. Now, the media circus has moved to a courthouse in San Antonio, Texas, where over 1000 participants have assembled to try and work out this situation "for the best interests of the children." This national travesty continues following the State of Texas' unprecedented, unconstitutional action of removing 416 innocent children from their homes.

I'm reading this great little book by one of my favorite authors, Elder Neal A. Maxwell, "Moving in His Majestry and Power". It was written in 2004, the manuscript finished just 10 days before his death. There are ten chapters of deep reflection on various subjects. I just finished the chapter entitled, "Conversion" and it has many wonderful insights. I recall a Church leader, maybe President Hinckley, saying a big concern of the Church should be "retention, retention, retention". In other words, those who choose to join the Church should be retained in the Church. It seems many converts join, but never become active and soon drift away.
Maybe the problem is true conversion. In his chapter, "Conversion", Neal A. Maxwell looks at what true conversion actually is.
Here are some quotes from "Conversion".... Click Here
