Enos 1:27 And I soon go to the place of my rest, which is with my Redeemer; for I know that in him I shall rest. And I rejoice in the day when my mortal shall put on immortality, and shall stand before him; then shall I see his face with pleasure, and he will say unto me: Come unto me, ye blessed, there is a place prepared for you in the mansions of my Father. Amen.
In August 1997, my Grandfather passed away. The circumstances of his passing were very hard on us. I was 16 years old at the time. I had just finished my 2nd year going to EFY. We left a night early because my oldest cousin was getting married. He was the first of the cousins to get married. Grandpa was unable to make it to the temple that day because his health was deteriorating.
He had been in the hospital for about a year. My Grandma was just unable to take care of him alone at home anymore, so they brought him to the hospital in my town, where he spent the final year of his life. I wish I could go back and change that year. I was a 15/16 year old girl, and the last thing on my list to do was go to visit my Grandpa. I almost resented him that year, because my mom spent more time with him than she did at home. She would spend every free moment that year with him. And now, I wish I would have done the same.
It was hard to see him in that state. He was the man I looked up to as a father figure for most of my life. But seeing him unable to do anything on his own was so hard. He couldn't walk, eat, shower, or even go to the bathroom on his own.
So that day of the wedding, was a day of happiness, and sorrow.
My family had planned to take a trip to Seattle at the end of that summer. We were going to be leaving right after the wedding. Upon hearing that my grandpa was ill, my mom wanted to cancel the trip. She knew that something was up, but everyone insisted that we go. So we did.
We gave our cell phone number to the family in case something were to happen. At about 5pm we pulled over at a tourist information centre in Washington State. They had just closed. We continued on our way, and late that night we pulled over to camp for the night. After we got our tents set up, my brother in his, me in mine, my mom went to check the cell phone for messages.
There was a message we received late on the phone. It was from my moms oldest brother. At about 5pm that evening, Grandpa passed away.
All I had heard from my tent was my mom screaming. Saying "I knew it I knew it I knew it". Thinking my mom and dad had just gotten into another argument, I made my way to the van to see what was going on. I don't even remember who told me about grandpa passing away. All I really remember from that night was my mom not being around, she had wandered off on her own. I remember my dad not really saying anything. He almost had a smug look on his face. And I remember my brother finding the scripture that is at the top of this entry.
That night, after I was told of the news, I silently went to my tent. I couldn't cry infront of my family. I had to be one of the strong ones. I went to my tent and I prayed. In my prayer I asked my Heavenly Father, if it was possible, for my Grandpa to give me one last hug. A feeling of comfort washed over me, and I knew that he was there with me that night.
We woke up early the next morning and left for home. We were about 10 hours away from home, but made it back in about 6 hours. Grandpa's funeral is the last time I remember the whole family being together. Everyone was there, except for my cousin and his wife. The older cousins all slept together in the tent trailer that night. There were about 9 of us. We did a lot that week. I didn't cry at all that week. I couldn't. I wouldn't let myself.
At our family get together the night before the funeral, everyone was saying their goodbyes to Grandpa. I couldn't. I wish I would have. I wish I could have touched him one last time. But I couldn't. I stayed as far away from the casket as I could. It was too hard to go close to it. I wish I could have said one last goodbye, but I know he is with me. I know he is watching over me. I have had a few dreams where it has been like he is there with me. My mom and my grandma have those dreams too. But the thing that makes me know for sure he is with me is the smell.
Every so often I'll walk by something, and it is so strong. It's not an every day smell. Not one of cologne or anything like that. Grandpa was a farmer. I don't know if it's a smell from the farm, but I'll smell it. And I'll just stop, and breathe it in. I'll take in the moment. Knowing that Grandpa is there, next to me.
This blog wasn't meant to be completely about my Grandpa. It was actually meant to be about friendship. As I was searching through my files from high school, I found a letter that Elder Maxwell wrote for my Grandma upon hearing of the passing of Grandpa. I read it over and paragraph struck me.
This struck me tonight for some reason. When I meet someone, if even for a short period of time, if there is a friendship there, I remember it forever. Even friends online. There are people I talked to 9 years ago, that I have lost contact with, and I still think about them. And some of them have returned and become friends again. Some, I'll never hear from again. But they are my friends nonetheless.
This has become a really really long blog. I guess that's what I get for blogging so late at night/early in the morning. But I just had so many thoughts running through my head that needed to be let out. So to all my friends, past, present, and future. Online and offline. Thank you. Thank you for finding me. I will never forget you. No matter how long you were a part of my life. Thank you.
