Answering the Small Prayers
Posted On 04/28/2008 16:16:54

I had a funny thing happen on Friday.  When I lived in Provo, I went to Great Harvest Bread quite a few times, but not too often because I was poor, and haven't been to one since then.  I've lived in this town for over 5 years now and have never been to the Great Harvest here even though it is close by.

Then on Friday, I was running errands and getting ready to sing for a funeral when I suddenly felt like I should pick up some honey whole wheat for some friends who are struggling in a major way.  I didn't know they liked Great Harvest.  The wife was going to watch my son, so I thought I'd drop it off when I brought him over.  When she answered, she was on the phone, so she told me after the funeral that her husband asked, "Did you ask her to pick that bread up?"  She said, "No, she just showed up with it."

Turns out, they had been there the day before and the honey whole wheat wasn't made yet, which was what they wanted and I just happened to bring them.  Her husband said, "At least we get answers to the small prayers!  I just wish we would get the big ones answered!"

I guess this is just another reminder not to ignore those thoughts for me and a reminder for them that Heavenly Father is mindful of them despite the struggles they are facing.

One Week Until My Ultrasound!!!!
Posted On 04/28/2008 14:58:30

I am so excited!!!!  I'm just trying to stay busy to pass the time and nervous that we won't be able to figure out what this one is.  With two of my kids, we came very close to not knowing because they wouldn't get in a good position.  I'm also nervous that my boys will be disappointed if it's another boy.  They REALLY want a sister.  My 5-year-old has been bugging me for a sister for over a year.  A month before I got pregnant, he whispered to my husband, "DAD!  MOM'S PREGNANT!  SHE HAS A BABY IN HER TUMMY!"  My husband said, "Huh?"  Then he asked me, "Mom, are you pregnant?  Do you have a baby in your tummy?"  I said, "Noooo ..."

Then he sighed and told my husband, "If Mom can't have a baby, we'll just buy one!"

I'm dying to know if it's a boy or a girl so we can plan.  If it's a girl, shopping should keep me pretty busy and help me ignore all the woes of pregnancy.  If it's a boy, I'll have to sort through the clothes to see what's still usable and if we need anything else.

I'm thinking Trevor for a boy and probably Carmen for a girl.

Planting Fruit Trees
Posted On 04/24/2008 20:44:49

There are so many things I haven't done because we're "moving soon".  We've been on the verge of moving for the past 5+ years now and it's silly how many things I have put off waiting to buy a house.  I didn't want to decorate, because I would just have to take everything down again.  I have some decorative things, but living in an apartment, I have never bothered having any window treatments made or beautifying our back porch.  Our last move was such a nightmare, I wanted to make our next one as easy as possible and not go to a bunch of work just to move in a few months.

But I realize I haven't been living in the moment and I need to stop saying, "We'll do it when we get a house."  Ok, some things we absolutely have to wait on to get a house, but many things we don't.  And we have had be really tight with the money as we have tried to save for a house.

A couple years ago, there was a discussion on another board about people who don't invest and that sort of thing because they think, "What's the point?  The Second Coming will probably happen soon."  There was a quote posted, I think by Elder Packer, saying that we should live like we normally do.  Another person posted a great story about Brigham Young.  The Saints had finally reached their destination and one man feared having to leave again.  He asked if he should bother planting fruit trees if they were just going to be driven out.  Brigham Young said, "If I thought we were leaving tomorrow, I would plant fruit trees today."  I'm paraphrasing here.  I should see if I can find it.

I thought that was a very good philosophy to have - to live in the moment.  Even though I know for sure now that we have to move this Summer, I am organizing my monstrous entertainment center today and I recently cleared off our patio and placed some pretty potted flowers around it.  I'm still determined to make this place a more attractive home, which has been a challenge with three boys in a two bedroom apartment.  I figure once we move into a bigger place, I will have gained so many skills trying to make this place livable.

Return of the Snoopy Snowcone Machine

Yesterday was my husband's birthday.  All my food plans went great!  I didn't know how much he liked green Jell-O until he told me he begs his mom to make it for Christmas Eve.  He said it tasted exactly like hers and he was surprised because other people have tried to imitate it and it comes out different.  I was proud.  I even ate a couple bites.  My son tried to give his to me and I said, "Uhhhh ... No thanks."  It's not my favorite.  Maybe the same recipe with a different flavor and no nuts might appeal to me more.

I also made creamy taco casserole.  He said it wasn't one of his favorites growing up, but it brought back a lot of memories.  When he saw the ingredients I had out, he said, "I know what you're making!"  And I broke my birthday rule and let him shred the chicken when it started to make me gag.  He insisted.  I didn't want to let him help with anything.  He said the casserole turned out better than his mom's because of the moist rotisserie chicken we used.  It was good and the kids liked it too.  Yay!  It's hard to find meals they all like.  I was surprised because it had green chiles in it and I thought they would reject it.

He loved the chocolate cherry cake and had forgotten about the special icing his mom puts on it.  It's really easy and I'm going to use it for other cakes!  You just boil some milk with butter and sugar for a minute, then add about half a bag of chocolate chips.  After that you just pour it over the cake and it hardens.

I did about three loads of dishes yesterday from all the cooking I did and I still have more, including a stubborn one with hardened cheese from the twice baked potatoes I made the night before. (I was letting it soak and I still can't get it off.)  The birthday boy attempted to do the dishes last night and failed miserably.  Ha!

After dinner, my husband opened presents including the Snoopy Snowcone Machine!  We went to this store recently and I was really excited to see it had made a comeback.  My husband said he never had one as a kid, but always wanted one.  It was a real hit with the kids and I was laughing thinking about all the time I spent on my front porch in the summer, taking half an hour to make a half cup of shaved ice.  I just realized this morning that my thumb feels bruised and that's what it's from.  I'm glad they didn't change it even though they could've given it a comfort grip handle or something.  It's just the way I remember it.

We also gave him the second season of 24, Pirates 3, a frisbee, some fun helicopter toy, and a game called Farkle, which you can also use to play "No Dice".  That's the game they play on the ship in Pirates of the Caribbean 2.  We've been playing it since before that and it's fun and simple.  Farkle has 6 sets of different colored dice.

Ah, well I won't have to cook tonight because we have plenty of leftovers (especially the Jell-O).

Reinforcing the Green Jell-O Stereotype
Posted On 04/17/2008 13:08:02

People joke a lot about Mormons making lots of green Jell-O.  I don't eat that stuff because of a bad experience with it during the stomach flu, but here I am making Lime Jell-O Salad for my husband's birthday.  As I was looking through the recipes my mother-in-law sent, I saw it.  Then I discovered he likes the stuff.  (He admitted this sheepishly.)

It's a mixture of Lime Jell-O, pineapple juice (still sounds good), pineapple chunks, Cool Whip (uh huh, I like Cool Whip), cream cheese (starts to lose me here), and pecans (blech!  I don't like nuts in my Jell-O!).

I think my husband will be eating Lime Jell-O salad for a week.    We'll all enjoy the happy look on his face while he eats it.

I'm a Mormon and I made green Jell-O.  That's right.  But that doesn't mean we all do it.  Some of us prefer strawberry.
