I am LDS, at least third generation, plus. I'm first generation American though (on my father's side). I identify strongly with being Norwegian.

Once a SAHM and homeschooler, now I am in graduate school (down to my last three credits!), doing internship as a counselor, and working full-time as a behavior specialist.

Maybe because I grew up as an Air Force brat and moved all over the world, I have a very hard time feeling like I can ever belong anywhere. I tend to be much more adept at online relationships than I am at real life.

If you have extra nuts (other than kids, I mean) seed them this way--lol!

My younger girl got her braces off and moves into a plastic retainer on Monday.  Not sure how well this will work with her OCD and autism, but I never thought I could get her to keep braces on for two years!

They found a tumor in my youngest son's skull yesterday, so please keep him in your prayers--his name Nathaniel.  I hate all the redtape of getting him in to the specialists--they are not sure they can "fit him in" before November.  AUGH!  His dentist found it and wants to send him to an oral surgeon (???) but I am trying to get him in to see an ENT.  I guess a tumor is not considered an emergency?

Bleahhhhhh

Karen

We had black walnuts when I was a teen and lived in Austin, Tx. They seem to grow like weeds, sometimes literally, there. I never thought about walnuts in Utah before we got this house, but apparently they thrive in Davis County. This Englis Walnut tree is huge and has a ton of nuts on it. And I'm the only one in my family who likes them. Other than the magpies, which sometimes carry off a walnut to add to their stashes, or to distribute around the neighborhood. I offer walnuts to my neighbors and they say they already have plenty, thanks to whatever critters are out there moving walnuts around. I know others around here with walnut trees too, and about the same story.

I like black walnuts too. The husks are good for dying wool, and are also a natural de-wormer for livestock. And I do like the flavor of black walnuts. English are easier to crack and to extract the nut, though.

Oh, I am not geting any fruit done. As usual, when I get a slower day, I sleep in because I have like one or two days per month for catching up on sleep and everything, and I really need it, and I still think I will get everything else done too, but have to go to internship and class in a couple of hours. It seems like a day off, but it isn't really - just a day that starts later than the typical day. Refrigerator is full of apricots though. I guess that's something.

I find it hard to find any one model that has all the solutions for anything. I use positive behavior supports at work, but I keep feeling that it misses something. Even people with an IQ of less than 30 have more to them than observable behaviors. I never was meant to be a strict behaviorist. How to reach the rest of what is going on with these people is the trick, though.

We are outside Lynchburg Virginia (Jerry Falwell fame) about 30 miles from everything (church and all).  I did my masters at Lynchburg College in the first autism program offered on the east coast--so I was lucky in my location.  I did my practicum in an autism-only school in Charlottesville (ABA protocol) near UVa.  I now know I thoroughly dislike ABA as the sole form of autism treatment.  (One of my "rants"~~~)  I have homeschooled 3 of my 5 children at one time or another.  My oldest girl (16) who is homeschooled now will do all 4 years of her high school at home (they insist here that if you start hs for high school that you stay with it) and then she hopes to become a physical therapist and hippotherapist.  She is already doing some hippotherapy with children who have dsabilities now, so this is a good start.  :O)

Several members of the church in Lynchburg are in the counseling program (MS) at LC and really enjoy it.  I considered adding that master's, but I think I would rather do the PhD at this point in social skills generalization in individuals on the spectrum.  There is a new research program at UVa with a social skills program based on primary and secondary reinforcers (pizza & video games) and drama.

Do English walnuts grow well in Utah?  The black ones grow like crazy here, but we have not been successful in getting them to grow here.  I like the black ones for baking but the English for eating.

Well-we are off to the orthodontist to get my younger girl's braces off--hurray!  2 years of  skreeching are over!

Have a great da

Karen

Hi! You sound like my kind of person. I have a lot of the same interests as you do, anyway. I'm jealous that you got a summer break! I needed one, or else a break now, to get all my fruit dealt with. If I'm lucky I might get one day this week. And I have plums, apples, pears, and still some apricots, all ripe right now. And a full-time job, two internships, and grad school ongoing. Yuck! You have neat critters too, it looks like. I relate to that too, although I had to give up a lot of mine when I moved.

Where are you living?  We are in Virginia (sough-central--1 hr N of NC) and I am currently losing my mind with fruit.  I have canned 8 cases of fruit in various forms in the past 3 weeks.  The weirdest I have done so far is watermelon-apple jelly and mango-plum preserves.  We have peaches coming out our ears from a "flowering only" peach tree that has produced bushels of peaches this year.  Soon it will be time to harvest the nuts (pecans and black walnuts).

I am still on break--no job in the offing yet, but one possiblilty with UVa (90 mile drive 1 way).  It sounds like a great position that would have be working with a groups of speciality pediatric doctors and their patients as an educational consultant.  Could be really interesting and put me in place for my PhD at UVa next fall.

I am homeschooling one child (well--she is really schooling herself) who is on chemo for over 3 years now, so I try to do things that can involve her getting expanded social activities.  She is riding in some horseshows (shows in English and western speed events) and her little brother & sister have gotten into it as well.

We are into all kinds of art--I do portraits (have a commission for a cat at the moment) and I am getting ready to bring out the wools and yarns to start knitting and crocheting winter items--too hot in the summer to do this!  I am looking for an inexpensive source of clay --- I want to get the children carving/modeling in it--good tactile/sensory therapy!

How did you end up in counseling?  I have considered it, but wound up in an autism program--my passion!

Well--I'm off to start on more pear and peach preserves!

Hugs-

Karen
